The birthname of the saint who in most popular depictions would have been responsible for marking Edwin to go to Hell - for the flawed paperwork the Night Nurse references - is Simon. Make of this what you will
I know people talk about how repressed Edwin is that having a man whisper in his ear sent him into a whole gay panic, but people don’t talk about Simon enough.
This boy was out here experiencing Feelings™️ and didn’t know what to do about it so he opted to offer his crush up as a demonic sacrifice during a “fake” ritual. That’s a whole other level of gay panic.
Imagine Simon gets out of hell with Edwin and somehow they know that Simon can now pass on to heaven, they just have to figure out his unfinished business
Simon assumes his unfinished business is Edwin. And specifically dating him.
Edwin agrees to give it a try, and as you can imagine, Charles is seething, not only with jealousy but just plain old protectiveness. He doesn't trust Simon, doesn't like him, and doesn't want him anywhere near Edwin.
At one of their dates, Simon goes to kiss Edwin, but Charles sees it (was he following them? Maybe), and before he can think about it, his body moves on its own and interrupts them.
Edwin is mortified, so he takes Simon somewhere else where they can talk. They talk and bond some more, Edwin even confines in Simon about his feelings for Charles, and in that moment, the blue light appears! Turns out Simon really wanted to be Edwin's friend, and their bonding moment gave him the peace of knowing that they finally became close.
After he passes on, Edwin has to go talk to Charles about his irrational, rude, and frankly confusing behavior as of late...
No one seems to talk about the beauty of the Simon scene. The scene nearly made me cry and I want to talk a bit about why.
Edwin sees this boy; who bullied him, was part of how he died and yet he is able to feel sorry for him.
It doesn’t mean his anger is unjustified, that he isn’t allowed to be upset, and I don’t think he really, fully forgives him. But he can feel empathy. And that is beautiful.
And Simon, who thinks he deserves this eternal punishment, is able to make peace with his deepest regret. He thinks he deserves it, but he is able to apologise and come to terms with what happened and what he did.
And in the end, he finds that peace and he is brought out of Hell. He is granted a better place, because of the actions of Edwin.
Edwin’s empathy saved Simon.
Im writting a fem payneland slowburn highschool AU and at first Eden was supposed to have a BREIF kiss with Simone but the more i think about them the more I love(?) them and it has now somehow become a 5 month long situationship
I have not seen anyone say it but I'm gonna. Simon's inclusion in hell was so so SO lovely. He was stuck there forced to think about how he was different and being pained by that. It wasn't the papercuts that made it hell. It was the fact that he thought he was alone in his feelings and that pained him so deeply. Only after he learned that he wasn't alone, that Edwin understood. Only then could he pass on.
I'm honestly shocked more people aren't freaking out over the fact that Edwin didn't see Death come for Simon with the blue light and probably thinks he's still there and how exactly is he going to let THAT information affect him and his life because you know it's gotta be leading to some poor decisions or mislead self-hatred or something! *chomps on popcorn*
