My expectation of Red Lights to be dealing with same-sex attraction comes from the synopsis found on this link and other sources saying that Red Lights draws a parallel between the secrets of suppose physics and closeted homosexuality.
I also just found a very excellent post about the film's script which confirms this theme, which I shall be posting momentarily.
