#JackedKirby - MasterWorks!!! We are starting off the new year right with an awesome post for something that I am VERY EAGER to add to my personal “Kirby Collection”. Jack Kirby’s Masterwork Portfolio... Back in 1979 Jack was technically still at Marvel (he was almost out the door again) and he released a Cool portfolio of unreleased images spanning his 40+ year career. The book was black and white and 11x20, oversized by traditional comic standards. It was a whopping 56 pages and loaded with all types of goodies allowing Kirby to show off outside of the traditional comic paneled sequences he had become famous for. Think pinups and one subject splash pages... this thing is incredible! The cover features The Fighting American, a lesser known Kirby character from his time working with Joe Simon. Kirby did the pencils on the cover, and it was inked by a young Walt Simonson!!! With a cover price of $10 you knew this wasn’t a typical comic (which were around 25-30 cents at the time). Plus the oversized nature of the book automatically highlighted just how unique it was. I’m not sure how many copies were sold, but right now you can find them second hand for somewhere in the $100-150 range on sites like Ebay. There aren’t many up for sale (trust me I’m looking!) so they are either locked in people private collections or were picked apart so people could hang the awesome images on their childhood bedroom walls! All I know is I need one... and I will HAVE IT!!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Masterworks #Portfolio #Pinups #SplashPages #FightingAmerican #SimonKirby #WaltSimonson #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #1979 #ComicsOfThe70s #70sComics
