#JackedKirby - RIP Joltin Joe Sinnott!!!! 💥💥💥 Today we got the sad new that legendary comic book industry professional and long term Jack Kirby collaborator Joe Sinnott passes away at the age of 93. Today is a sad day indeed... 💥💥💥 I say “comic industry professional” instead of INKER because Sinnott was much more then an inker. That may be what he is most well know for, but he has written/pencilled many stories and strips through the years as well as done other industry duties. So to reduce him to just being an inker would be a disservice. 💥💥💥 That being said, most people in the comics industry and fans consider him to be one of the finest inkers to ever ink a page. Stan Lee is quoted as saying “Pencillers would hurl all sorts of dire threats at me if I didn’t make certain that Joe... and ONLY JOE... inked their pages!” Joe and Jack worked together magically many times, but it was on the FF they became synonymous with each other. He inked FF #Issue5 (1st appearance of Dr Doom) and left the book before returning from some outside work to the book on #Issue44 in Nov of 1965. He would remain on the book through #Issue102 (Kirby’s last FF in Sept of 1970) and then continued on the book UNTIL 1981!!! That’s 16 straight years!!! 💥💥💥 What’s most amazing is despite working together so long, Kirby and Sinnott never ACTUALLY MET until the 70s at a comic convention. This was illustrated by @tom_scioli in a cool panel (pic 5). Everything was done by mail! 💥💥💥 Joe was a proud vet, a consummate professional and the pinnacle of inking in the industry. He will be greatly missed. @walter.simonson.5 said in a post “anyone who met Joe became his friend”. Just looking at him and hearing stories about him makes me believe that to be true! 💥💥💥 Rest well Joe... and condolences can be sent to the Sinnott Family at 27 Spaulding Lane in Saugerties, NY 12477 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #JoeSinnott #Sinnott #RIP #SinnottAndKirby #Inker #ComicInker #FF #FantasticFour #MarvelComics #StanLee #60sComics #70sComics #80sComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #GoneButNotFoegotten @joltin.joe.sinnott https://www.instagram.com/p/CB3mavQhPdw/?igshid=1ihocu6qyibny

#JackedKirby - A Man With A Pencil I saw an excerpt on Facebook from Kamandi #Issue32 (August of 1975) in which there was a behind the scenes featurette about Jack... so I immediately sought it out. Apparently Issue 32 is a Giant Suze special issue, so DC needed some extra content to go along with that months story. Along with reprinting Issue 1 of Kamandi, the issue featured a 4 page text article by Steve Sherman about Jack’s process. It featured some cool candid pics, behind the scenes details of Kirby’s process and a birds eye view into his lifestyle in Thousand Oaks, California. A very cool piece of content. I strongly suggest you seek it out to better see the text, because it’s a great read! #JackKirby #Kirby #Kamandi #SteveSherman #BehindTheScenes #Featurette #70sComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #ComicsOfThe70s #DC #DCComics #GiantSize #ComicsOfIG #IGComics https://www.instagram.com/p/CD1RcZthNRM/?igshid=1u9zy01foobmo
#JackedKirby - A Neanderthal... Kirby Style!!! One of the coolest things about Kirby’s 70s series for both DC & Marvel has to be his best is constantly bending genres within the confines of the books. Like Devil Dinosaur is supposed to be a prehistoric title and Kirby sprinkles in Aliens, or how Black Panther is supposed to be a jungle action adventure book that is infused with gangsters in pinstripe suits looking for treasures.... it’s an interesting knack that Jack figures out to weave very interesting storylines into each title. Take for example this issue of the Demon. #Issue3 of the Demon (published November of 1972) is firmly set in the horror genre, with a hideous demon of hell as the main character and occult madness galore. But this issue features out of time cavemen, mind controlling madmen and dinosaurs... all@done in Kirby’s unique stylings! This Neanderthal caveman opens the issue on the opening splash page. You don’t necessarily KNOW that it’s a caveman out of time... but it is abundantly clear that he is far from normal. And Kirby’s unique facial construction really drives that home. The Demon is definitely one of the best examples of genre juggling that Jack ever pulled of in his career... hard to believe he didn’t even want to create the book in the first place!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheDemon #neaderthal #caveman #dinosaur #mindcontrol #JasonBlood #DC #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGcomics #ComjcsOfIG #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #Genre #GenreBending https://www.instagram.com/p/CDVC0NHBz3E/?igshid=1mx2arp3rs03l
#JackedKirby - A Wizard and his Demon... 💥💥💥 Everyone who follows the page knows I am a HUGE fan of The Demon series... but the more I read it, the more I find more gems.... like this beauty opening splash page from #Issue5 of the series (January of 1973). 💥💥💥 We get this BEAUTIFUL shot of Etrigan, in strike pose ready to pounce, flanked by his master... The Wizard Merlin has never looked so cool!!! Look at the detail in his hooded cloak... it’s phenomenal! 💥💥💥 This series is loaded with amazing images and slash pages (so many splash pages!!!) but this has to be one of my faves... I’m sad I’ve never posted it before!!!! 😔 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheDemon #Etrigan #Merlin #DC #DCComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #SplashPages #KirbySplashPages #swordsandsorcery #medieval #IGComics #ComicsofIG https://www.instagram.com/p/CB17HyghDiD/?igshid=1g9i47jvjkbwp
#JackedKirby - Superman... or Mister Miracle via Mexico? 💥💥💥 I love a foreign reprint as much as the next guy, but Mexico was on some next level stuff when they began producing reprints of famous DC comics in the 70s/80s. 💥💥💥 Trying to capitalize on the more WELL KNOWN heroes (Batman/Wonder Woman/Superman), Mexican publisher Anguila Novaro used the Big 3s names as the titles of the books... even if they didn’t appear in those books AT ALL! 💥💥💥 Take this one for example. This is #Issue1425 of the Superman series... you can see the issue number stamper on the top left corner box. But in reality it’s a reprint of Mister Miracle #Issue1 from 1971.... Superman is no where to be found! This was published in Mexico in 1984 by Novaro Anguila publishing. 💥💥💥 In a cool piece of trivia, even though Anguila Navarro reprinted over 1500 books under the “Superman” title masthead, just 42 of those issues featured a character NOT Superman in the cover/issue. That makes this book super rare in the sense that even though there many be plenty of Mexican reprints out there, only a very small percentage of the ones featuring someone other then The title characters are out in the world being resold! This one is listed on EBay and is currently listed for $264.00!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Mexico #MexicanReprint #MisterMiracle #MM #Superman #NovaroAnguilaPublishing #NovaroAnguila #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #80sComics #ComicsOfThe80s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics 💥💥💥 Shout out to Thomas Sciacca for posting this on FB and triggering my curiosity! https://www.instagram.com/p/CBTiEFMBUZ4/?igshid=ohlorscwbnot
#JackedKirby - Jack Gets His Chance to Write and Draw with CREDIT... Sort Of... 💥💥💥 So towards the end of Jack’s run at Marvel in the early 70s Stan Lee stepped away from “writing” most of the books he had been helming for years and handed off many of the titles to new blood like Roy Thomas, Archie Goodwin and Gary Friedrich. He still was “writing” Spider-Man, Cap and a few others... but he was no longer the SOLE writer pumping out Marvel books. This was a perfect time for Jack to ask for some writing duties for stories he would be pencilling. He got that wish with Amazing Adventures #Issue1 (published in August of 1970) on an Inhumans story! (Pic 1) 💥💥💥 Now here is where it gets funny: Pic 2 shows the credit box for Amazing Adventures, which PROMINENTLY displays Stan Lee/Editor credit AHEAD of Jack’s writing/drawing credit!!! Even when they were giving Jack his proper credit and due... Stan somehow shoehorned himself a credit ahead of him! 💥💥💥 Need more proof: Also published that SAME MONTH (Aug of 1970) was Captain America #Issue128 and Pic 3 of this post shows the credit box for that as well. Stan, the writer on this book, is still top billing... but no mention of his Editor role. Why not? Why not say writer/editor? And if he DIDN’T edit it, who did and why weren’t they given similar credit? Same month... different credit protocol? Hmmmmm... weird, right? 💥💥💥 Finally Pic 4 of this post shows the credit box for Black Panther #Issue1 that came out after Jack’s return in 1975-76. You can clearly see Jack only came back under the auspices that he would write/draw and edit his books... so there couldn’t be any more funny business with the credits (or the money associated with each role!). Smart business practices... 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #AmazingAdventures #Inhumans #creditbox #credit #JobCredit #ProperRecognition #Editor #Writer #Artist #StanLee #RoyThomas #ArchieGoodwin #GaryFriedrich #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #Comic #ComicBook #Comics #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/B_lMoeyhjEd/?igshid=ses856i3voz7
