RIP #Simotua . The following info was shared by one of Simotua's foster dads.. This is a portion of the e-mail sent by DSWT: (...)We do however take a vestige of comfort under such circumstances knowing that at least he died surrounded by the love of his human family, who were with him throughout.  Rest in peace Simotua.  It was a privilege to know and love you, and you will be sorely missed by all your elephant peers, and also by your adopted human family and your foster-parents who have followed your progress and through their support, empowered us to leave no stone unturned in the struggle to try and save your life.

Simotua, a 16-month elephant found with life-threatening injuries inflicted by poachers in the Rumuruti forest in Kenya, is making a good recovery

With a hole in his head from a poacher’s spear and a limp from the snare that nearly skinned his right leg, it’s no wonder that Simotua is shy.

“He is not very comfortable trusting humans,” Peter Mbulu, one his keepers, said.

The 16-month-old calf was rescued last month from Rumuruti forest in Kenya after rangers found him without his mother and with life-threatening injuries. His wounds were treated and packed with green clay, and he was given antibiotics.

He is recovering alongside 27 fellow orphans, reared on bottled milk at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage on the edge of Nairobi National Park. (Read more...)
