Simply Dead- Heart Attacks
"Death? Do you miss home?" I asked. We were sitting on the grassy hill overlooking the path through a park, waiting for the poor man who was running to come by for his heart attack.
"Home?" He asked and I glanced over to him to see he was thinking.
"Yeah home...before you died." He shrugged half heartily.
"Home was...a long time ago. I miss my simpler times I suppose but the luxury's now are too amazing to wish to go back to my home."
"And when was that?" I asked. He smiled at me a slight laugh on his lips.
"When the ancient cities still were around. Think gladiators and Greek gods." I laughed.
"No way that was thousands of years ago."
"Didn't you know I'm pretty famous," he chuckled. I half smiled and turned to look back at the people waiting for that one man. He must be a slow runner I thought.
"Do you miss home?" Death asked. I shrugged while I thought. Did I?
"I dont think so. Home was different. If I had to choose here or there I’d choose here."
"Why here?" He asked. I opened my mouth to respond but spotted our runner instead.
"Oh there he is!" I cried out pointing. Death looked up and in one swift movement grabbed my hand pulling us both up to our feet.
"Lets go give out heart attacks. You get a heart attack." He exclaimed and pointed directly at the runner. I laughed a bit and pushed him to the path.
"Go on. Lets get this over with I'm tired of this park." He waved me off and began to stroll down the park path hands in pockets. As the runner began to jog by, Death merely bumped shoulders with him and kept walking. It took a few seconds for the heart attack to happen, enough time to make sure Death was away and I could slip closer. I waited for his soul to come out. It was a bit gross to stand there watching the poor man suffer a heart attack. But I pretended to play concern as I waited. Finally I saw the man’s soul slip out of his mortal body.
It was murky in color almost grey and it floated slowly upwards. Nobody could see it but Death and myself. I watched as the souls empty eyes looked around, souls are often disorientated when they leave the mortal body they were contained in. It was probably figuring out that he was dead. I waited a bit longer to make sure the whole soul was free of the body before moving away, if you misjudged the soul a portion of it could stay within the dead flesh and that’s how evil spirits are born. As I walked away from the group of people his soul followed me, they all did I was a magnet for souls. Turning I touched the confused soul and watched as it slow faded away moving on to a better place.
"I hate heart attacks," I said as Death walked up beside me. We began to stroll along the path away from the death scene.
"I enjoy them. Not as much as a stabbing though." I glanced at him sideways and saw his laughing smile obviously joking. But his eyes spoke differently a glimmer of excitement in them.
"You’re really messed up." I commented and kicked at a loose stone.
"Obviously, it’s part of the job description."
"Come on sicko lets go eat. Im thinking some fatty burgers."
"Heart attack kinda burgers?"
"There's other types of burgers?" I asked shocked.
"Look who's messed up now? We just preformed a heart attack on some poor soul and your now wanting to stuff your face full of burgers that cause heart attacks." Death said rolling his eyes.
"Gotta have a sense of humor. Otherwise I’d lose my mind.
"That's a very thin line on humor Reaper."
"Oh come on. Dont act like you care a tiny bit. Remember the peanut allergy death? And how you then ate nothing but nuts for a week after."
"Oh yeah." Death laughed. "Your right I don’t care. Come on my hungry now like literally I'm starving."
"Your not starving." I called out as he moved away.
"I can pretend!" He sung back. I followed after him as he led the way to what was probably his favorite place to eat in this out of the way town.
Simply Dead
Simply Dead is a collection of short stories that follow Death and Reaper. A pair of immortal humans who have sinned while alive and are paying their dues as soul collectors. It’s a experimental project so the updates might seem out of sequence and odd at times. Fingers crossed it turns out okay. Links to my first update of Simply Dead.
