Simply Dead- Heart Attacks
"Death? Do you miss home?" I asked. We were sitting on the grassy hill overlooking the path through a park, waiting for the poor man who was running to come by for his heart attack.
"Home?" He asked and I glanced over to him to see he was thinking.
"Yeah home...before you died." He shrugged half heartily.
"Home was...a long time ago. I miss my simpler times I suppose but the luxury's now are too amazing to wish to go back to my home."
"And when was that?" I asked. He smiled at me a slight laugh on his lips.
"When the ancient cities still were around. Think gladiators and Greek gods." I laughed.
"No way that was thousands of years ago."
"Didn't you know I'm pretty famous," he chuckled. I half smiled and turned to look back at the people waiting for that one man. He must be a slow runner I thought.
"Do you miss home?" Death asked. I shrugged while I thought. Did I?
"I dont think so. Home was different. If I had to choose here or there I’d choose here."
"Why here?" He asked. I opened my mouth to respond but spotted our runner instead.
"Oh there he is!" I cried out pointing. Death looked up and in one swift movement grabbed my hand pulling us both up to our feet.
"Lets go give out heart attacks. You get a heart attack." He exclaimed and pointed directly at the runner. I laughed a bit and pushed him to the path.
"Go on. Lets get this over with I'm tired of this park." He waved me off and began to stroll down the park path hands in pockets. As the runner began to jog by, Death merely bumped shoulders with him and kept walking. It took a few seconds for the heart attack to happen, enough time to make sure Death was away and I could slip closer. I waited for his soul to come out. It was a bit gross to stand there watching the poor man suffer a heart attack. But I pretended to play concern as I waited. Finally I saw the man’s soul slip out of his mortal body.
It was murky in color almost grey and it floated slowly upwards. Nobody could see it but Death and myself. I watched as the souls empty eyes looked around, souls are often disorientated when they leave the mortal body they were contained in. It was probably figuring out that he was dead. I waited a bit longer to make sure the whole soul was free of the body before moving away, if you misjudged the soul a portion of it could stay within the dead flesh and that’s how evil spirits are born. As I walked away from the group of people his soul followed me, they all did I was a magnet for souls. Turning I touched the confused soul and watched as it slow faded away moving on to a better place.
"I hate heart attacks," I said as Death walked up beside me. We began to stroll along the path away from the death scene.
"I enjoy them. Not as much as a stabbing though." I glanced at him sideways and saw his laughing smile obviously joking. But his eyes spoke differently a glimmer of excitement in them.
"You’re really messed up." I commented and kicked at a loose stone.
"Obviously, it’s part of the job description."
"Come on sicko lets go eat. Im thinking some fatty burgers."
"Heart attack kinda burgers?"
"There's other types of burgers?" I asked shocked.
"Look who's messed up now? We just preformed a heart attack on some poor soul and your now wanting to stuff your face full of burgers that cause heart attacks." Death said rolling his eyes.
"Gotta have a sense of humor. Otherwise I’d lose my mind.
"That's a very thin line on humor Reaper."
"Oh come on. Dont act like you care a tiny bit. Remember the peanut allergy death? And how you then ate nothing but nuts for a week after."
"Oh yeah." Death laughed. "Your right I don’t care. Come on my hungry now like literally I'm starving."
"Your not starving." I called out as he moved away.
"I can pretend!" He sung back. I followed after him as he led the way to what was probably his favorite place to eat in this out of the way town.
Simply Dead
Simply Dead is a collection of short stories that follow Death and Reaper. A pair of immortal humans who have sinned while alive and are paying their dues as soul collectors. It’s a experimental project so the updates might seem out of sequence and odd at times. Fingers crossed it turns out okay. Links to my first update of Simply Dead.

Simply Dead - Rude Awakening
No one asks to be a reaper, it’s not like you sign up for it as you wait your turn. I remember one second I was alive and the next instant I was dead. In a room that had no windows and was white, suddenly a man appeared covered by shadows and he told me I was dead, I wouldn't be going on to Heaven or Hell because I had made mistakes and that I was to repay them on Earth again as a Reaper.
“Go collect the dead ones,” he said and handed me a folder. Then I was out of the white room standing in another room. I looked around confused and dazed.
“Hey,” he said and I turned around. “My names Death. And you’re Reaper. Let’s go your late.”
That’s when I first met Death. He’s my partner. He goes and ‘touches people’ well any physical contact works, then they die. Then I walk up and touch them and they get sent away to wherever they go. It’s been five months since I died, since I became a Reaper. Looking back on when I first met him, he seems a bit rude, but he’s not. I think he was having an off day.
“Death? Where are we?” I asked.
“L.A.” I frowned I didn't like L.A. alive or dead. Death looked at me confused.
“Don’t you like it?” he asked. His black cloak billowed away behind him I had the same cloak on it was the unofficial but official uniform of our kind.
“No it’s too sunny.” I concluded after a minute of thinking. He chuckled and looked away.
“I forgot you lived with the polar bears.”
“Boy do I miss them,” I said. We both laughed a bit too hard at the lame joke. L.A. spread out before us with its bright lights and tall skyscrapers.
“Let’s go eat,” Death declared smiling. I groaned but followed him anyway as he took off.
We could still taste food, feel the weather and feel emotions. But we were immortal Death didn't come knocking twice for us. So Death filled a lot of his spare time with eating. We didn't gain weight so I guess it was okay for him to eat what five grown men would eat for one meal.
“When do we start?” I asked as we dug into our food. Well Death devoured it like he hadn't eaten in days. He shrugged mouth full of fries and half his burger, tapping his phone and shaking his head. Great the list was late we’d be up all night getting it done. I looked out the diner window my reflection stared back at me. I sighed and poked at my food. I never was hungry or had the urge to eat like Death, then again Death forced the food down. We didn't get human needs like hunger.
“Death do you find me beautiful?” I asked. He glanced up his mouth still full of food. Seriously did he even break from shoving it in? He swallowed hard and took a long swig of his drink to wash it down.
“Well yeah. Why do you ask?” I shrugged and looked away still poking at my food.
“It’s just I dunno. I was wondering.” Death smiled and it caught me off guard. First he had a face of a pig while he ate and now he was suddenly that handsome guy without a fault.
“You’re gorgeous Reaper. Even my dead eyes can see it.” I blushed and ducked my head before looking back up.
“You use that line often?” I asked feeling the blush fade.
“Oh yeah. All the time,” he said smirking and when I looked away again out of the corner of my eye I saw him wink. God he was so immature. I turned back and started to dig into my food. At least eternity wouldn't be boring.

The mind is a terrible place. It makes confusion logical, it makes logic impractically, and it allows us to invent and create and the most dangerous part of the mind? Our imagination. For our imagination mixes reality with fantasy and when you've been caught in the minds web it’s impossible to distinguish the two and from there the mind can harm and kill. So the mind is a terrible place. For it taunts and tease, destroys and crushes all those dreams.
You saw the exit sign shining brightly at the end of the tunnel your freedom from the horrors. You saw it bright and alive yet as you ran towards it, the light began to flicker and with each step it seemed to match your racing heartbeat. The question popped into your head was it really there or was it a lie, was it really the way out? Stopping halfway from the darkness, halfway to the light, your eyes scanned the walls and floor around, where was that damn doll? A simple ugly terrifying doll would only smile if it was a trap and frown when it knew it was safe. There was no doll. You began to walk carefully forward this had to be the way out it just had to. The closer you got to the light the more and more you felt confident it was the one.
Then the humming started. Soft at first that it could have been the wind but it picked up volume and with it words began to form. “Dolly, dolly where have you gone? Dolly, dolly are you high or are you low? Oh dolly, dolly where have you gone?” the child’s voice sung.
Terror raced through you like no other and frantically like a scared child you began searching the tunnel looking for a place to hide, there was none. You could run, run for the light and hope that the child was behind you. So running and jumping over rocks ignoring the caution practiced moments before you concentrated on that pure white light. Slowly something rose. A black shadow began to form creeping up from a blob of black to the shape of something else. Five feet away you stumbled. Your body stopped in mid run and tried to run backwards instead. It resulted with you falling down, sitting up looking at the outline of a child.
“Have you seen my dolly?” the voice a child but twisted. Twisted so badly you muffled a scream. Scrambling backwards panting and muttering words over and over.
“Don’t run away. I only want to play.” The child said and there was a thump as it jumped down from the opening onto a rock. “You’re my special friend. Come back and play.” The voice was getting irritated growing in impatience the anger showing. You didn't stop scrambling back but stood up and ran into the black dark pit you’d just come from. Anywhere but where the child was.
“You can run, but you can’t hide,” the child sung in such an innocent way it made your spine tingle. Then a scream so high pitched your blood stopped dead. Face paling not daring to look back. “I’ll find you,” the walls whispered around you. “You can’t escape from me.” The voice was evil. It made your throat close up and you stumbled from the lack of breath.
There was a cool touch of a hand on your leg and screaming you jumped away batting at where the pressure had been.
“Leave me alone!” you screamed but the sound only echoing off the dark walls it sounded foreign. Hot tears dripped down your face and when you looked around and saw the light was lost you fell to your knees. Had it been real or not you’d lost it and you were crushed. For now again you was surrounded by pitch black and the terror it held with no escape. You thought about closing your eyes but remembered the time before when you’d done that. Just closed them to not see the world around but to escape the monsters and when you’d opened them the child had been there. Deep dark eyes. A bloody mouth and a pale white face. It clutched the ugly doll staring at you head titled to one side. A second after your eyes had been opened it had roared so furiously that you’d jumped, your head smacking against the rock wall. It placed its cool hand upon your cheek and began to hum no words just the humming. You shook the chilling memory from your mind pushing it down among the others. As you sat on the cold hard ground you felt your body collapsing with fatigue. You’d fought sleep off for so long that it was inevitable you’d pass out. Praying for the damned child to leave you be for just a few hours you let yourself drift off.
This afternoon had never seemed so peaceful and perfect you thought as you continued to drive down the road. The sky was littered with puffy white clouds across the purest blue you've ever seen. Picture perfect you thought wishing you could stop to take a picture. But there was an urgency in your mind reminding you that you were driving somewhere important. Yet you didn't’ remember it at all it was if you’d forgotten completely. Still you had somewhere to be and couldn't stop for a silly picture you’d recall why you were in a rush soon enough. Turning your attention back to the road you kept driving your favorite song came on the radio and you cranked the volume up quite high, the music wouldn't bother anyone the road was deserted you thought and began to sing along. As you bobbed your head enjoying the beat you reached for your water bottle and knocked it over clumsily and it rolled away to the other side of the car. Cursing the water bottle you leaned over struggling to grab the bottle, but it kept slipping from your fingers and for a split moment you thought screw the bottle but you were so damn close only a bit more till you reached it, so you kept at it. Then suddenly you remembered that you were driving and that you weren't looking where you were going. You ripped your gaze up fast to the road.
The body smashed into the windshield cracking it and it spun up and over the car flying behind it as you slammed the brakes. You could see red, hair and fabric stuck to the broken glass. The wheels locked and the car was moving too fast, scared your hands ripped the wheel to the left and suddenly the car was rolling just like a crazy fair ride. The seat-belt held your body as it was pushed forward and backward uncontrollably, your head was shaken like a toy and it smashed into the headrest and came inches to hitting the steering wheel. Suddenly the crazy ride stopped. You tried to move and you felt pain all over. Looking around you could see broken glass and you realized you were hanging upside down and far back on the road you could barely see a shape of a small child laying still on the blacktop. You reached painfully for your seat-belt and unlocked it, unprepared you fell hard to the ground and cried out as pain ripped through your body. You tried to move to the child your face stinging with tears praying that the shape would move but a horrible voice told you otherwise. After multiple attempts you realized you weren't moving anywhere and you could feel yourself losing conscious. Sleep swallowed you up and the last thing you saw was the still body of the child.
You woke shivering with fear and drenched in a cold sweat. There was no sign of the child and you sighed yet the horror racing through you didn't stop. The dream seemed much more than a dream you thought, as if it was déjà vu. But how could it be déjà vu you have never been in an accident. The darkness around you was eerily quiet and suddenly the nightmare you had before was nothing compared to the fear that was growing inside of you now. Then you heard a whispering echoing off the walls. Cringing you shut your eyes tight and waited yet nothing happened and all you heard was the faint whispering voice. Slowly you made your way towards it.
“Don’t play in the road Cathy,” the child whispered. Yet it wasn't the child that had haunted you and terrorized you before.
“That’s what Mother said. A road is no place for a little girl. Why’d you have to run out there?” the child asked no one in particular. You turned the corner and saw a little girl sitting on the ground clutching a pretty little doll with red hair and button eyes. The little girl wore a white dress her brown hair pulled into pigtails.
“What are you doing here?” you asked the child. She jumped and turned quickly her eyes wide like a scared fawn.
“I’m lost. I went into the road….and now I’m lost,” she whispered. “Can you help me get back home?” You nodded and held out your hand to the small child.
“Of course I will. What’s your name?” you asked.
“Charlotte. This is Cathy,” she said holding up her doll.
“Don’t worry Charlotte I’ll get you home.” You smiled happily and led her away.
You searched with Charlotte for any way out but found none. To your relief the monster of a child never reappeared and you found yourself feeling calm. The calmer you felt the more hope you felt you’d find a way out.
“All I remember is black,” Charlotte whispered to Cathy. She did that a lot talking to the doll more then you.
“Have you flown Cathy? It’s the most wonderful feeling ever. I felt free and happy.” You looked up, the more you overheard of the one sided conversations the more worried you became. Charlotte spoke of a lot about unsettling topics. Playing in a road, flying, feeling nothing but emptiness. But you pushed the thoughts away you shouldn't get upset you thought it might bring back the nightmares.
It happened suddenly you had woken up to blood curdling scream. Charlotte! You thought and looked frantically around. As you spun your head to the left you didn't see the endless darkness you had before instead you saw Charlotte. A pale face, endless dark eyes and a bloody mouth.
“No,” you whispered your voice a hoarse gasp. “Please no.”
“Where is my Mother!” she screamed. “You promised to take me home!” You ran faster than you had before. Lungs burning you raced on your eyes searching for freedom. Your fear grew more and more when you didn't hear the child it could be anywhere. Then the light hit you the exit sign shining bright you dashed for it. You didn't care anymore you needed out of the hell you were trapped in. Then like a flash the child stood there. Its eyes drilling holes into your body.
“You can run,” it whispered. “You can’t hide.” It reached out for you and you shoved the child to the side sprinting past. You ran straight into the opening under the exit sign.
Antiseptic cleaning products and the smell of latex gloves smashed into your senses. You could hear machines beeping. Your throat felt dry and rough and when you tried to speak you couldn't get a word out. Sunlight filled the room and you sighed grateful. You were free of the hell, it had just been a really bad dream. Then the humming started.
“Dolly, dolly where have you gone? Dolly, dolly are you high or are you low? Oh dolly, dolly where have you gone?” If you could have you would have run or cried out but you were trapped again. You looked around the room and saw the child sitting in a chair legs crossed looking at her hands sadly. But she wasn't pale at all, her mouth wasn't bloody and she looked like a normal healthy child. You’re racing heart calmed.
“Charlotte?” you croaked out. The child looked up her eyes were normal. But what was Charlotte doing here? She stood up and walked over to the bed.
“You can run,” she whispered. “You can’t hide.” You screamed as the body of the girl shook and suddenly the monster was there stroking your cheek. You cried without a sound how badly you wanted out of this hell.
A man came out of the room clip board in hand and turned to see a young women. He shook his head sadly.
“There hasn't been much change. Stable no health issues but no signs of gaining consciousness.
“How long will this last doctor?” the woman asked wringing her hands.
“It’s impossible to tell, comas in most cases are the body of the patient’s way of coping with intense situations. Since the injuries where non-fatal it’s safe to assume the coma is mentally induced. But there isn't much we can do.” The woman nodded sadly and smiled softly as the doctor moved away to another room.
“Charlotte come on now dear lets go get some food darling,” the women said and held out her hand as the child ran up and grabbed it.
“I left dolly in the room. She said she’d keep an eye out for monsters,” Charlotte said smiling.
“That’s so nice sweetie. How’s your arm?”
“It feels sore mommy. But look the nurse helped me put stickers all over it,” she stated and showed the cast. As they left the building a man rustled a newspaper as he turned the pages. Across the front page the headline read, Near Fatal Car Crash Leaves Driver in Coma and Young Child a Miracle Survivor.
The Train
The train always ran in a dark tunnel it rocked and swayed and sometimes in the pitch black it would stop for a brief second.
My carriage had a few people aboard it. We didn’t talk to each other we just sat in our seats staring at nothing.
And the train kept running. And we kept waiting.
If I try I can recall memories but they are fuzzy and make little sense. Occasionally a hooded person walks through the carriage, faceless never speaking sometimes holding slips of paper. I haven’t gotten one yet.
So I star into the blackness and wonder when I get off.
The doors opened and someone ran into the train they were panting hard and collapsed onto the floor as soon as the door closed. I stared at the person curiously. Nobody had boarded the train since I had arrived and this person seemed different. They looked up startled and were grabbing themselves in a solitary hug. Suddenly our hooded person arrived I called him Hood to myself. Knelling next to the person I saw their hands touch briefly and suddenly the person calmed down and became very quiet. Had this happened to me? I thought. I could barely recall. I turned away from Hood and the new person and looked out into the pitch black. Why had that person been so scared?
New sat near me the closest anyone on our carriage had. New was the new ones name. I gave everyone names. The old wrinkled one was called Wrinkles. The small short one was called Shorts. And the two who looked the same were called Same 1 and Same 2. And now there was New.
The endless train moved on and on. Time seemed to stop flowing yet, I could never tell. Hood arrived again like always leaving chills on my spine. Hood moved past me not glancing towards me at all and stood in front of Wrinkles handing a piece of paper into Wrinkles hands. I was jealous Wrinkles would leave and see outside the train. Instead Wrinkles dropped the paper and pushed it away with a foot. Hood looked down the long black cloak swirling with invisible wind. I saw Wrinkles mouth move but, no sound was heard. Then Hood left and the paper vanished.
New was lying on the floor curled into a ball and never moved. Wrinkles looked at the ground. Shorts stared out the window and Same 1 and 2 looked at each other. Hood didn’t come back for a long time. After Wrinkles Gown appeared. Gown was like Hood in the way they would show up suddenly only Gown wore a bright dress that shimmered and sparkled. Still faceless and hooded. Gown gave me less chills then Hood. When Gown appeared was also when Shorts left. Gown picked up Shorts and walked away, vanishing. Shorts was gone, now Same 1 and 2, Wrinkles, New and me were left.
Hood came back ignoring Wrinkles, New and myself walking straight for Same 1 and 2. Moving with hast and anger, grabbing Same 1 by the hand and pulling them towards the door. The train had stopped the door was open a bright light filled in from the outside. Same 2 latched onto Same 1’s free hand struggling against Hood. I watched as the three played a tug of war game, with Hood winning as Same 1 and 2 were pulled closer to the open door. Hood won he pulled all three through the door into the light. The bright light flashed and someone screamed it sounded painful. I’d never heard it before and neither had the others we all stared at the open door with light streaming through it. It was like a beacon begging us to go to it but it was making me uncomfortable so I sat staring. Wrinkles turned away first and New still sat frozen to the ground. Hood reappeared through the open door and the it closed the light vanished. Looking to where Same 1 and 2 had sat moments before it’s covered head shaking, Hood vanished.
The train started up again. It was dark outside and quiet besides the rocking and swaying as the train moved. Three left waiting.
It stopped the train did. But there was no Hood or Gown and no light outside. It was dark and as the doors slide open I saw nothing. Wrinkles stood up walking slowly back bent to the door. Where did Wrinkles think this was? It was as if Wrinkles saw something I looked but saw nothing. Smiling Wrinkles stepped out into the darkness it enveloped around the wrinkled hands and bent body till nothing could be seen. Hissing closed the doors shut and the train moved on as if nothing happened. I stared at New because now we were the only ones left. I had strange feeling inside of me of loneliness and it scared me.
Hood came back. Walking the aisle looking at me with no face staring at New curled on the floor. At some point Hood sat across from me as if waiting. So now it was us three on the rocking train that hissed and swayed as it rolled along.
Hood held a piece of paper. Was it finally mine? I doubted it the way Hood kept glancing at New as much as me I got the feeling he was teasing me. I knew Hood would give it to New I just knew it. Hood stood cloak billowing around walking closer and closer and past me handing New the paper. I saw New move for the first time since arriving. The paper looked blank but, New stared at it as if it showed something.
It happened again New left. The train stopped and the doors opened showing light and New left. Hood watched and now Hood stared at me waiting. I wanted to scream to just give me my ticket already. I was alone and I felt like nobody else would get on the train.
My eyes felt heavy. I was tired I could feel it. Just like I could feel the cold and warmth when it came and went. I even felt wind on my skin. It was weird that I was feeling all these things I’d never felt them before was I dying? I fought hard to not die. My eyes won and as I closed them I saw Hood walk away. I wanted Hood to come back.
She ran through the halls dodging staff and other people expertly. Accidentally running past room 235 she skidded to a halt and turned around. There was no pausing as she burst through the door into the room. The window was open letting fresh light in and the room was covered in flowers, balloons and get well cards on the bed he sat there awake. She felt tears cascading down her face and she covered her mouth. He turned to her his eyes wide and wet with tears too. He opened his arms and she rushed forward falling into him awkwardly.
“I’m sorry I slept so late,” he whispered.
Cherished Words
He felt weak as he stared at her. She sat alone at the far side of the building’s lobby and he knew he had never seen her before. She wore a white dress it was a bold contrast to her shadowy skin. Clearly she had been in the company of the Humans, did that mean she liked them? It wasn’t unheard of for Shadows to like their cousins. Well obviously she did like them she was wearing their clothes. That didn’t mean she hated Shadows she was a Shadow herself. He shook his head trying to clear his confused mind. Humans were such a mess compared to Shadows. They were loud and rough, they spoke too much and there was too much colour. He swallowed his fear and moved towards her. Suddenly he was very much aware of his own body. The long shadowy limbs he called arms and legs, the way his skin was much darker than others. Was he monsterish compared to those Humans?
Sitting next to the unnamed girl he hesitated again. His heart was thumping loudly and he was struggling to find the courage to talk to her. He laughed at himself. Talking? Why was he jumping ahead of himself they weren’t even there yet he’d never talked to a girl before what made him think this one would be the one. It’s because she’s different he thought. He quickly tapped her arm biting his lip he waited for her to turn.
When she did he felt his heart plummet to the ground. She was breathtaking. Her eyes were wide and pure and as they made eye contact he smiled inside. They spoke then between their eyes not ushering a word only looking. He could tell she was sad and hurt and was trying her best to be happy for him. He gave her compassion and urged her to tell him what happened. It must have been the wrong thing to do because she looked down and he lost that connection with her.
Don’t cry he thought as he looked at her sadly. Then an idea came to him, gently he began to pull at the air around him. It was a form of art to be able to grab the invisible shadow of air and mould it. He struggled silently as he pulled and pushed on the shadow. It began to take shape and form and soon enough he had it finished. It was small and clear just like the Humans glass only flawless and priceless.
He felt himself swell with pride as he nudged her again. She turned around and instantly the sadness was gone as she looked at his hands. He looked back into her eyes and she was smiling.
“Tal,” she whispered.
“Zee,” he whispered back.
He’d never spoken before and he found his voice sounded rough and very low. It was a special thing that was shared only with another whom they felt an intense passion for. Humans called it love. Tal’s voice was beautiful it matched her eyes and filled him with happiness.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered. “Please don’t ever cry again.” He didn’t care why she was crying before all he cared about was keeping her happy.
