The New York Public Library’s mission is rooted in the principles of free and open access to knowledge, information, and all perspectives—in essence, the right to read. In light of recent, prominent efforts to ban books in communities across the United States, we are partnering with publishers Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, and Scholastic to make a small selection of commonly banned or challenged books freely available to anyone who chooses to read them—via our e-reader app, SimplyE.
Beginning today, anyone can browse, borrow, and read these books for free on any iOS or Android device with SimplyE through the end of May. While there are hundreds of thousands of titles in the app available to New Yorkers with an NYPL library card, these books will be available through the Books for All Collection, with or without a library card, and with the added bonus of unlimited downloads—no waits, no fines.

Perfect Stay At Home Books to Fuel a Hobby or Project
As we spend more time at home during the Library's temporary closure, NYPL staff have been turning to books for inspiration and information to aid us in all kinds of projects and endeavors—from home improvements, self-improvements, cooking, crafting and much more. Find out what we've been up to and the books that are helping us—all of these titles are accessible at home through our SimplyE app.
If you’re anywhere in New York State and want to get a New York Public Library card to access more of our digital materials, here’s how to do it!
Now that book collections manifest in apps, you can retreat to browsing the stacks and cracking open a new book, for free, anywhere you want.
