REUNION J
Isn't Union J the band that joked in an interview once that Louis would come out as gay or was gay? I feel like it's out there in the void.
This news was syndicated (meaning it was distributed by a professional team) around 29 October 2013.
• Union J star Jaymi Hensley has admitted that he thinks it is "hilarious" that One Direction fans want their idols to be having secret "gay affairs".
The 23-year-old, who is openly homosexual, said he found it strange that nowadays girls dream about boyband members getting romantically involved with each other instead of them.
Reflecting on how times have changed since he first came out to his friends and family at the age of 14, Hensley told Metro: "Look at the One Direction fan fiction - they're fantasising about One Direction having gay affairs with each other.
"Times have changed. I haven't read it, but it sounds hilarious. Girls are fantasising about them being gay when they're not; in the past, the situation was completely opposite."
Hensley also stated that coming out publicly during last year's X Factor "had no negative effect" on Union J's popularity and only strengthened the bond with their fans.
“Me coming out has had no negative effect on our band at all," he said. "We've got a record deal and songs in the charts.
"If anything it's helped form a connection with fans. The fact I've been able to achieve this while being true to who I am might inspire other gay kids - it doesn't matter what you look like or who you love, you can do whatever you want in life."
One Direction member Harry Styles this week had to deny that magazine photos of him apparently kissing bandmate Louis Tomlinson were real.
The pair have been given the couple name of 'Larry Stylinson' by fans, though Tomlinson last year dismissed suggestions of a secret relationship as "the biggest load of bulls**t... ever".

What’s interesting is that Union J was formed by Simon Cowell on The X Factor (by adding Shelley to Triple J) in 2012, two years after forming One Direction. Its PR team used an out gay member of the band to: 1. make it seem as if closeting no longer existed since Hensley was out and proud, 2. make it seem as if management would never consider gay sexual identity a financial liability.
In the recent documentary, Shelley contradicted both of these implications. He was constantly anxious about being outed. He stated that two gay men in one band would cause serious liability to the band as a product to sell to girls.
Perhaps Hensley was allowed to express his sexuality because he had come out prior to auditions— management had no choice, because the horse was out of the barn. But they could use Hensley’s example to closet not only his own bandmate, but a much more famous, much more lucrative boyband— One Direction. A band that, as Shelley pointed out, management was at pains to duplicate.
This interview, in fact, reminded me of out gay men, such as Dan Wootton and Andy Cohen, asking Louis to denounce Larries (in a condescending way, treating all Larries as “girls with their fantasies”), and forcing Louis to deny Larry.
In the above article, Louis and Harry do not even get the dignity of a serious consideration about their sexuality as individual human beings, but must have their sexualities linked to a romantic fan theory (because it’s fantasy to think they’re not straight, right?). The homophobia inherent in such a criticism is hidden because it’s in the same article as an out gay boybander’s sound bites.
Dan Wootton served the same purpose. In his unctuous, odious, putrefactant way, he asked Louis questions about Larry, Eleanor, his tattoos, and the bears, because Dan knew Louis’ closet was iron tight, and Louis could do nothing but make it tighter.
hello? is this thing on?
does anyone still follow me on here anymore?
big news y'all.... UNION J IS BACK. i have no idea what's going on, i truly did nOT expect this at all... didn't really think i'd see the day if we're being completely honest. i had some big feelings surrounding the break-up back in 2016 as i think we all did and i have big feelings now here in 2022. seeing that teaser video, everything just comes flooding back. this band was a source of light and joy for me during one of the hardest and most crucial periods of my life where i was in such a dark space... i kind of have a depression fog for the beginning half of my college career and i don't remember much, but i sure as hell remember the union j days, but specifically union j days here on tumblr with everyone. everyone knows boybands are my thing but THIS boyband in particular... this is the group i saw grow from DAY LITERAL 1. i saw them go through as much as you could see from a fans perspective, the good the bad the ugly. all of it. like, this band is special to me. 10 years this year that these guys got together... it's hard to fathom. it's been 5 years since union j as we knew it ceased to exist and like i said i felt... many emotions. in all honesty there was a time after that where i didn't know how i'd feel about a UJ reunion. but now that it's happening, it's one of those things where you never knew how much you needed it until it finally happens. i've always been a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. sometimes things need to fall apart so they can come back together stronger. this definitely feels like one of those situations.
anyways, if you're still here please say hello! i know blog urls may have changed and stuff but i still remember a bunch of people from back then. i'm kinda looking forward to editing union j pics again hehe.
