♡ Reflection Edit - GIMP ♡
I received a couple requests to recreate the reflection tutorial for GIMP, so here it is! It is a little more complicated than some GIMP tutorials, so it’s best to have some understanding of GIMP first. Enjoy and keep reading for the tutorial.
Step 1. Start off by cutting out your sim (tutorial here) and make sure the sim is on a transparent background. Use the crop tool to crop the image. Cropping it to a square or more horizontal rectangle will work best for this tutorial.
Step 2. Next change the canvas size by going to Image>>Canvas Size... You may need a calculator or scrap paper for this. Take the original height of the image and double it. Mine ended up being 1116px. Put that number into the height size. The offset should be at 0. Click OK. This should double the height of your image.
Step 3. Next duplicate your sim layer by clicking the duplicate icon at the bottom of the layers window. You should have two sim layers. Select the new sim layer and go to Layer>>Transform>>Flip Vertically.
Step 4. Use the move tool to move that sim layer below your original sim layer. It should just look like you mirrored the sim.
Step 5. Next we will add a ripple effect. Make sure the flipped sim layer is selected on go to Filters>>Distorts>>Ripple. Set your settings similar to mine and click OK.
Step 6. Next add a background by adding a new Transparent Layer. To add a new layer click the New Layer Icon at the bottom of the layers window. Drag it to the bottom so it is under the sim layers. Now use the Bucket Fill Tool and select the color of your choice to fill this layer.
Step 7. Now click on the flipped sim layer again. Right click on the layer and choose Add Layer Mask... make sure that you have White (Full Opacity) selected. Click Add.
Step 8. Make sure the Layer Mask is still selected in the Layers Window. Now click on the Gradient Tool and choose the Default Black to White Gradient. Next click and drag upwards to create a transparent gradient. If you don’t like how it looks the first time, undo and try again.
Step 9. Next create another New Transparent Layer. Download these textures and copy and paste one onto your image (I used texture 010). When you paste the texture it will show up as a Floating Selection. Right click on the floating selection layer and choose Anchor Layer. This will merge it with the new layer you just created.
Step 10. Use the Move and Resize tools to make sure the texture covers the entire image.
Step 11. Then set the texture layer to Dodge at about 36%.
Step 12. Next we will add some geometric lines. Download these line textures and choose one to copy and paste onto your image. Repeat the process of creating a new transparent layer, paste the texture and then anchor it. Move the texture until you find a good spot and set that layer to Screen.
Step 13. I duplicated the texture by clicking the duplicate layer icon. I then dragged one layer underneath my sim layers and rotated it a little. One geometric line layer is on top of my sims and the other is under the sims.
Step 14. Next, if you would like you can add a subtle gradient. Create a new transparent layer and choose the Gradient Tool. Choose any two colors, I chose a grey and dark pink color. Make sure the gradient is set to FG to BG (RBG). Click and drag to apply the gradient. Set that layer to Darken Only at about 33%. You can mess around with colors and the blend mode for different effects.
Step 15. Now create another new transparent layer and then choose the rectangle selection tool and select the bottom half of the image. Use the Fill Bucket and the color white #ffffff to fill in this bottom portion. Set the opacity of the layer to about 13% or whatever looks good to you!
Step 16. This step is optional. To add noise, create another new transparent layer and use the bucket tool to fill it with the color #808080. Next go to Filters>>Noise>>HSV Noise and set your settings similar to mine and click OK.
Step 17. Set that layer to Overlay at about 60% or whatever looks best to you!
That’s all for this tutorial! I hope you liked it and don’t forget to tag me so I can see your creations! :D
