Holy shell I had so much FUN with @weeklymagmas's Fairy Tales Jam this weekend. I got Leo as Rapunzel (specifically Disney's Rapunzel, thanks Big Mama's Child AU by @hitokshellart) is a very obvious choice, Mikey makes a great Snow White (and my first time drawing Meat Sweats as the wicked old hag giving Mikey the poisoned apple), Leo and Donnie as Yoyo and Doc Croc from the Simsala Grimm cartoon (I watch those a lot on YouTube), and the only good thing Leo gets for being Sleeping Beauty (aside from getting to wear a pretty princess gown) is that the sleeping curse pretty much cures him of his insomnia.
WENT LOOKING THRU MY FILES ON MY COMPUTER AND HOLY MOLY I COMPLETELY FORGOT I DREW THESE BUT I AM ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED U GUYS HAVE NO CLUE
LOOKIT
side note; I LOVE how I drew yoyo ( 2nd pic, on the right) here, he looks so cute oh my god 😭💕
both of these r from january when I just got back into cuphead and I drew them in ms paint. I know they're unfinished but when I found them again just now I was so charmed I had to share 'em!
Here are some more fairytale movies that I think deserve more love. If you want to see the first part please click [here]
1) Szaffi (The Treasure of Swamp Castle) [dub] [sub]
I know Szaffi is not TECHNICALLY a fairytale but a novel with fairytale elements, similar to the novel “memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing” J.v. Eichendorf. This Hungarian movie, I will warn you right away, has aged quite a bit in its depiction of the romani people (by calling them the g-slur for starters) so please keep that in mind if you decide to check it out for yourselves.
Szaffi follows the romance of Jonas, a nobleman who had been raised by a group of Romani people after loosing his family and estate in a war as a child, and Szaffi a mysterious Romani girl as they attempt to find the treasure of the deceased Pasha in the ruins of Swamp Castle and must master many trials along the way.
This movie is one of the handful of films that have ever been dubbed into my native tongue and given that I owned it on VHS as a kid, I have a ton of nostalgia for it despite its many flaws.
2) Till Eulenspiegel (Jester Till)[here]
I will say I was quite surprised to find out that apparently not a lot of people like this movie outside of France. Tho i do kinda blame the pretty awful English dub for that ngl. The movie is based on the german folkloric character “Till Eulenspiegel” (Literally Till Owl-mirror), a mysterious jester who pulls pranks on people to expose the absurd nature of society’s vices.
In this movie Till just arrives in the city of Boomstadt to visit his grandfather only to find the man missing. So Till goes on an adventure to find his grandfather and also save the kingdom from a usurpation plot along the way. Unfortunately I was only able to find the movie online in French :(. So of anyone has the original german dub or the so-so english dub, let me know.
3) The Nutcracker Prince [here]
Based on E.T.H. Hoffmann’s story “the nutcracker and the mouse king” and Tschaikovsky’s famous Ballet the nutcracker. During a Christmas Party a young girl, Clara, is gifted a Nutcracker from the family friend Drosselmeier, who tells her the nutcracker is actually a cursed young man.
That night Clara awakes to find the nutcracker leading her toys into a battle to defeat the Mouse King’s army.
4) Kvitebjørn kong Valemon (The Polar Bear King) [dub]
Based on the fairytales “White bear king Valemon” and “east of the sun and west of the moon” (one of my favourite fairytales of all time) the story follows King Valemon who is just about to ascend the throne, only to be turned into a polar bear by a bitter witch who wants to be his queen. Valemon must find a bride in the seven year span that he'll be a polar bear, and so he travels to Winterland and finds a wife to take home. Although they are happy, she is not allowed to look upon his face when he turns back into a man at night. When she breaks this rule, Valemon will be trapped to the witch forever.
5) Der var engang (The Fairytaler) [dub]
I am stretching the rules a bit here as this is not a movie but a TV series. It’s an anthology series based on the fairytales of Danish Author Hans Christian Andersen, with every episode adapting one of his stories
6) Simsala Grimm [dub]
Again same deal as with the fairytaler, this is actually a german TV series. The cartoon follows two plushies (Yoyo and Doc) as they get awaken to life and whisked away to the magical world of Simsala by the ghosts of the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. In Simsala their task is it to help the heroes of different fairytales to reach their happily ever after. Like for example telling prince charming to make the maid try on the glass slipper or tell the dwarfs to pur Snow White into a glass coffin.
I watched this show religiously as a child and it played a huge part in who I am today.
7) Sechse kommen durch die ganze Welt (How six made their way in the world) [here]
Princess Ella and the court musician Jasper are deeply in love. Unfortunately Ella’s father, King Wilbur, is against their union and has Jasper thrown into jail and tells Ella he left the country. In jail meanwhile Jasper meets Flora (a girl with the powers to control plants) and Lukas (the strongest man alive). Together they break out of jail and eventually meet and join forces with Markus (the fastest runner), Lisa (a witch) and Benjamin (the greatest sharpshooter on earth). Together they return to the court of king Wilbur and strike a deal: if they can best 6 trials of his choosing he will let Ella and Jasper get married.
8) Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama [dub]
After being forced into exile by his father king Dasharatha for 14 years, prince Rama retreats to a life in the forest alongside his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. All is well until one day the demon king Ravana of Lanka kidnaps Sita. Rama and Lakshmana, with the help of Hanuman and Sugriva and their army of Vanaras thus begin the journey to rescue Sita and defeat Ravana.
All I will personally say about this movie is: Christopher Nolan this is how you adapt an Epic legend from a culture you do not belong to! START TAKING NOTES. But yeah all jokes about my one-sided beef with Nolan aside, this movie is genuinely amazing and you can tell everyone who who worked on it tried their best to stay faithful to the Ramayana as far as a 2 hour runtime and the animation budget could allow it. It genuinely made me fall in love with the Ramayana and gage me the motivation to try and read the actual text myself.
This movie is aggressively 80s but in a charming way. But to be fair I am a transformers fan and adore the og 80s cartoon despite all its flaws so maybe I’m bias. But anyways the movie actually takes place AFTER the original fairytale. Snow White and the prince are preparing for their wedding and go to visit the 7 dwarves to invite them but on their way there they are attacked by Maliss, the evil queen’s brother, separating Snow White and the prince.
When Snow White wakes up she finds herself in a familiar little cottage but her friends the dwarves are no where to be seen. Instead she comes face to face with their cousins the seven dwarfelles. So now with the seven dwarfelles Snow White goes on a journey to find the prince and defeat Maliss.
10) Die furchtlosen Vier (The Fearless Four) [dub]
Based VERY (and i cannot emphasise the very enough) loosely on the Grimm brothers’ fairytale “The town musicians of Bremen”. This german movie follows a gang of 4 animals (a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster) who all wish to become musicians. Their journey takes them to the town of Bremen where the evil CEO of MixMax, Dr. Greed, has banned all music and from there on the movie turns into a surreal fever dream about capitalism and corporate greed sucking the life out of art. The movie is very odd I fully admit to that but it’s also oddly charming and I remember rewatching it quite often as a kid.
