Day 3 inside Bisket Jatra and Bhaktapur is showing no signs of slowing down.
Every morning the drums start before sunrise. Every afternoon the crowds grow thicker. Every evening the oil lamps light up the ancient stone squares in ways that make you feel like you have stepped five centuries back in time.
Tomorrow April 13 is when things get really intense.
Sindoor Jatra begins in Madhyapur Thimi. Thirty two chariots. Thousands of people. And fistfuls of bright orange vermillion powder thrown into the air until every face every street and every ancient temple is completely covered in color.
If you are in Kathmandu right now, get yourself to Thimi tomorrow morning by 7 AM. Wear old clothes. The sindoor gets on everything and never comes out.
