Manaslu circuit trek without a guide, can you actually do it solo now

seeing a lot of confused takes on this so here's the actual answer.

Nepal dropped the old "minimum 2 trekkers" rule for manaslu permits back in march 2026. solo travelers can now get their own restricted area permit without needing to find a partner or pay for a fake second trekker just to hit the headcount.

BUT. you still need a licensed guide. that part never changed. so "solo" here means no travel companion required, not no guide required. two totally different rules, people keep mixing them up.

guide requirement = still mandatory, always has been

group minimum = gone as of march 2026

TIMS card = actually unclear right now, NTB's own page still lists manaslu under TIMS even though some agencies say otherwise, confirm before you go

guide cost = usually $25-40/day, normally bundled into your package

manaslu's a restricted area for real reasons, close to the tibet border, pretty remote, limited infrastructure in spots. that's why it's stricter than annapurna or langtang where solo independent trekking is fully allowed.

everest base camp weather, month by month

so you're trying to figure out when to trek everest base camp and the weather is the thing holding you back from booking. fair. here's the short version.

best time to go is spring (march to may) or autumn (sept to nov). both give you clear skies and stable temperatures, which is why almost everyone picks one of these two windows.

quick season rundown:

spring (mar–may): 7°C to 18°C, warming up, rhododendrons blooming, gets busy by april

monsoon (jun–aug): 15°C to 20°C but wet, heavy rain, muddy trail, skip if you can

autumn (sep–nov): 6°C to 17°C, clearest skies of the year, busiest in october

winter (dec–feb): 4°C to 6°C by day, nights dropping to minus 14°C or colder, quiet trail

october is the crowd favorite for weather. monsoon washes all the haze out of the air and you get these insanely clear mornings where everest, lhotse, and nuptse just stand out sharp against the sky. day temp around 12°C, nights drop to minus 5°C. busiest month of the year though, so book early.

april is the other top pick. day temp around 10°C, nights minus 5°C, and the lower trail turns pink with blooming rhododendrons. also overlaps with everest summit season so base camp itself has this extra buzz to it.

winter (dec to feb) is brutal, nights hit minus 17°C or lower in january, but the trail is basically empty and the views on a clear day are unreal.

monsoon (jun to aug) is the one season most people skip. heavy rain, muddy trail, clouds hiding the mountains for days. not fun.

random fact that surprised me while researching this, the weather doesn't just change month to month, it changes hour to hour too:

mornings, calm and clear, best visibility of the day

midday, still good, strong sun

afternoon (1 to 2pm onward), wind picks up, clouds roll in

evening, temp drops fast, visibility usually gone

that's why trekking days always start early.

Nepal trekking packing list, the no-nonsense version

Things nobody tells you before your first himalayan trek.

you will not wear half of what you pack. pack for layers, not for outfits.

the layering system that actually works:

thermal base layer

fleece or light insulated mid layer

waterproof windproof shell

down jacket for nights and high altitude mornings

that's it. that combination covers everest base camp, annapurna, manaslu, langtang, basically anywhere you're trekking in nepal.

backpack size, the question everyone asks:

got a porter? 25 to 35L daypack is plenty

going solo? 45 to 55L

anything bigger and you're just inviting yourself to overpack

boots > everything else on this list break them in before you land in kathmandu. new boots + multi day trek = blisters you will regret for the entire trip.

stuff people genuinely forget:

power bank (charging on the trail is unreliable and cold drains batteries fast)

extra cash in NPR (atms vanish above namche)

a sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C if you're going above 4,000m

sunscreen, even on cloudy days, altitude sun does not care about clouds

Four 8,000m peaks, one viewpoint, the side of the Everest region most people never see

Everyone who treks to Everest Base Camp gets the same iconic shot from Kala Patthar. Fewer people know there's a second sunrise viewpoint in the same region that shows you Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all at once, and it sits above a turquoise glacial lake instead of a pile of moraine.

That's Gokyo Ri, the high point above the Gokyo Valley, reached by continuing past Base Camp instead of turning straight back to Lukla. Nepal is the only country in the world where you can celebrate Buddha Purnima at the actual birthplace of the Buddha.

Buddha Purnima 2026 falls on May 1. Lumbini, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath will be glowing with butter lamps from before sunrise. Pilgrims from across Asia gather here every year on this day.

The pre-sunrise lamp ceremony at the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini is one of those experiences that is genuinely hard to describe. Thousands of people standing in silence in the dark, waiting for the first lamp to be lit.

What the Sacred Full Moon Festival Actually Looks Like on the Ground

Nepal is the birthplace of the Buddha. On May 1, 2026 — the full moon of Vaisakha — the country marks it in a way no other place in the world can.

Here is what you will actually see and experience on the day.

At Lumbini The Maya Devi Temple marks the exact spot where Siddhartha Gautama was born around 563 BCE. Before sunrise, pilgrims from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and across Nepal are already there. Butter lamps line every path in the sacred garden. The Ashokan Pillar, erected in 249 BCE, stands in the early morning light. Monasteries from 12 countries within the complex hold their own ceremonies. The atmosphere is unlike anything else in Asia.

At Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu One of the largest stupas in the world. On Buddha Jayanti, 108 butter lamps ring the entire base. Hundreds of people walk the kora, the clockwise circumambulation, from dawn onwards. The eyes of the Buddha painted on all four sides of the stupa seem to glow in the lamp light. Tibetan monks chant in the surrounding monasteries all day. Non-Buddhists are completely welcome to join the kora walk.

At Namobuddha Two to three hours from Kathmandu by road. Almost no tourists find this place. The stupa marks the spot where, in a previous life, the Bodhisattva is said to have offered his own flesh to a starving tigress and her cubs, a supreme act of compassion. The monastery here performs elaborate pujas on Buddha Jayanti. The hillside setting with mountain views and total quiet makes this the most moving site of all.

Three rituals you will see everywhere

The release of captive birds into the sky as an act of compassion and merit-making. Hundreds of birds released from the stupa grounds at once.

The ceremonial bathing of Buddha statues with scented water, symbolising purification of the mind.

The sharing of kheer, sweet rice pudding , in memory of Sujata, who offered a bowl to the exhausted Siddhartha before his enlightenment. It is considered the meal that changed the world.

I Stood at 5,416 Metres Above Sea Level and Here Is What Nobody Told Me About Thorong La Pass

It is 3am and you cannot feel your fingers. You are standing outside your teahouse at Thorong High Camp, 4,925 metres above sea level, in complete darkness. The stars above Nepal are extraordinary from this altitude. That is the last thing you notice before you put your head down and start walking toward one of the highest trekking passes on Earth. Thorong La Pass sits at 5,416 metres on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. It is higher than Everest Base Camp. It is higher than any mountain in North America or Europe. And every year thousands of completely normal, non-professional trekkers cross it and come back changed by the experience. Here is what most guides do not tell you. The hardest part is not the climb. The descent from the summit to Muktinath drops over 1,600 metres on steep rocky trail and by the time you reach the bottom your legs are shaking and your knees feel like they belong to someone much older than you. The climb tests your lungs. The descent tests everything else. The tea house at the summit is not always open. This sounds like a small thing until you are standing at the top in minus 15 degree wind chill having burned through every calorie in your body and you realise there is no hot tea waiting for you. Carry your own snacks. Always. The afternoon winds are not a suggestion to leave early.
