Meanwhile, we finished up the masks! Two bondres (comic characters), at your service, ready to appear in the next gamelan concert. I can't believe we actually made these, and learned to dance them a bit.
Of course, there was the standard set of performances, including topeng. In the continuation of my crash-courses on male dance by various masters, I got a crash-course on dancing topeng yesterday. So much acting required! Especially for characters such as this ("the crazy one.")
Meanwhile, in a nearby banjar was part of the funeral ceremony for a very important priest who had passed away six months before. As I noted from the 8-ft tall posted schedule, the ceremony was taking place over the course of a whole month, and was big enough that they had to construct a two-story bamboo tower so that the guests could watch the music/dance performances in the priest's honor.
Of course, it was only appropriate that the opener was another eminent professor-dancer I Made Bandem performing kebyar duduk. I got to talk with him at his house for a few hours the day after--so neat! He's one of the most influential Balinese artists/scholars of the last several decades, and one of the nicest people I have met in Bali (which is saying something.)
Incidentally, earlier that day, I had started a crash course in kebyar duduk basics, and was all the more impressed by Bandem's performance (even though he complained that the gamelan had stifled his creative expression by playing too easy of an arrangement.) Kebyar duduk...I can explain it best in terms of yoga. It's like going from standing, to a perfect mobile toe-squat, to lotus, and all the way back through them again, while holding a piece of fabric and using a fan in time to music. I'm told that if I can practice the basics and become sufficiently strong this year, the choreography will only take a few weeks to learn.
