GOODBYE SHITTY OLD OFFBRAND SEWING MACHINE THAT DOSENT EVEN LET ME ADJUST STITCH LENGTH OR WIDTH
i am a proud singer owner (as of like 10 minutes ago)
Vintage Singer info!
I was visiting websites looking at old hand-crank sewing machines, and I thought...what is the oldest sewing machine I have ever handled? This one. An old Singer. The parts in brackets for numbers means its unreadable but those numbers are my best guess. The sticker that was on the machine has the following: *** -403- This sewing machine has exclusive features which are covered by Canadian patents issued in 194(9) (195)1, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1959. Also Design Rd. Canada 1957. Other patents pending. Printed in U.S.A. The Singer Manufacturing Company, St.Johns, P.Q. Canada *** So, what this tells me is the oldest his machine could be is 1959, and made here in Canada.
This machine belonged to a friend of mine. Not sure if they still have it or use it. It was very rusty underneath, from sitting idle for who knows how long. It's also electric.
The cording looked like it was still in really good condition.
So after LOT of machine oil, and a bit of de-linting, and getting the parts moving, I was able to get this old machine working again, in 2017!
There was a hinged door by the take up arm, at the head of the machine, which if you opened it up, it shows a diagram of how to not only thread the needle but how to thread the bobbin shuttle.
On the undercarriage, there is a label saying "Simanco U.S.A, and the numbers are 17(8 or 2)176
In the top portion, it looks like there was a possibility of a stitch selector for a part called a "top hat fashion disc", and I know older Kenmore machines had a similar feature where you take a wheel that has a mechanism to move the needle in a specific pattern (ie for zigzags, fancy embroidery satin stitches etc), which also allowed for additional discs also known as "fashion discs" to further alter the patterning of the stitch you're using.
Luckily for this owner, because the steel cams are in place in the top, this one could potentially produce some really pretty stitches if they can find the discs for it. Based on what I could find at this website below, there were upwards of over 20 discs that could potentially be used with this machine, but I could also be wrong, but it just looks like it could potentially fit.
Here's the website to Simanco parts for singer machines: https://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/simanco_accessories
After further delving into the rabbit hole that is the internet, this machine is the "403 Slant-o-Matic"I don't have access to the machine, but to find the serial number, it's located stamped into the underside of the sewing platform at the needle end of the machine.
This website was super helpful in finding out some of this information as well: https://www.oldsewingear.com/
I found the instruction manual for free for the Singer 401 series, which is extremely similar to the Singer 403 series, which can be found here: https://sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf
Even better, I found the instruction manual for the 403 Slant-o-matic "Special", at this link here: https://www.manualslib.com/download/683144/Singer-Slant-O-Matic-403-Special.html
Based on the manual, that pegs this sewing machine at possibly being made in 1958, cause it has the date in the manual itself.
I hope all this detail helps someone out there.

I was going to wait until I finished cleaning it and patching up the cabinet to show it but I GOTTA SHOW THIS.
Meet my 1900 Model 27 Sphinx design Singer treadle machine, feat the moment when I realized the decals on this side of the machine weren't faded, they were just COMPLETELY HIDDEN UNDER A LAYER OF GRIME!
Before and after pics, first pic featuring the streak that led to the realization.
@systlin I sent you an ask about buying one of these and it encouraged me to go for it. I've never been happier! Thought you'd enjoy this moment
