I'm reposting this response, because singers so often ask me about yoga and how various forms of exercise can help or harm the voice. By no means am I a yoga instructor. But I am a voice expert. And, over the years, I've witnessed firsthand the effects that yoga can have on the voice - both positive and negative. Specifically, for singers, the goal is freedom of breath, reduction of excessive muscular tension (neurotic holding patterns), and restoration of healthy alignment. Yoga is only as beneficial - or potentially damaging - as you make it. Find a good teacher who understands the scientific merits of the practice and is not too steeped in the tradition alone. I'm often accused of having "favorites", when it comes to my students. HELL YEAH, I have favorites. Artists who come to me and WORK will always get the best that I have to offer. Most people say, "Eric, I want it so bad!", cuz they romanticize what hard work looks like. In their minds, it happens in a quick movie-like montage, in which they "give it all they've got" for a few minutes as rock music plays in the background and then fall asleep at their desk. In real life, progress can be slow and the victories hard-won.
