trains and i
over the past year or so i have taken the train a lot. i've taken the train to commute to new york city for my internship, to get in and out of philly from villanova, to visit friends at delaware and princeton, and to go to a concert or a baseball game.
my experience on the train is an interesting one because it seems to me as though every single time i take the train, there is at least one uniquely odd or interesting sight to be seen.
for example, once i was sitting one row back from two rows that were facing each other at the end of the car. the man sitting in the third row away was facing me. he was not exceptionally strange looking, although his business attire with his trenchcoat, suit, tie, and sneakers was a tad off. plus, his beard was awkwardly uneven. that aside, he had headphones on and was listening to a walkman. no, not an ipod or even a cd player. a walkman as in a tape player. however, it gets stranger. he was reading a book and was holding the book upright such that it was obvious that he wanted anyone who looked over to know what he was reading. the book was called "acting with accents," and the man went in and out of mumbling random sentences in what i believe were supposed to be different accents. the icing on the cake was when he wasn't creepily staring at me or mumbling "i actually would like to go to a club" in a bad german accent, he was softly singing opera.
another time i was sitting across the way from a hispanic couple. after almost getting thrown off the train for getting outrageously obnoxious with the conductor for no reason at all, they started sharing ipod headphones...and belting the songs they listened to. let me tell you, their rendition of mariah carey's "obessed" was...unique.
the best of all, though, was when i was on my way to princeton to visit some friends. the ride wasn't short, so i took out my printed out copy of "don giovanni" so look for quotes and brainstorm my essay, which was due in a few days. there was a family sitting adjacent to me. there was a woman in her forties, a girl maybe 16, a toddler and a newborn, who seemed to belong to the teenage girl. the family fulfilled many of the stereotypes of a lower class black family with a teenage mother. the details of the sociology involved there are interesting on their own but the best part was their conversation about me. keep in mind, i was maybe 5 feet away from them and, in a normal voice, they were debating why on earth i was reading on the train. the conversation ended with the older woman telling the confused teenager, "dorks make a lot of money, that's why he's reading."
i love people watching, but this time i was the one being watched. it was very awkward given how i obviously could hear them and what not. oh, the sights to be seen on the train.
