Lyrics for an old classic, pt.2
I couldn't find anything about the background of this song! Such a lovely tune, brought to life the magic of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing it together in Roll on Texas Moon (Released September 12, 1946). 10/10 would recommend looking up that scene on Youtube!
(And Gabby Hayes, he's always so great in Roy Rogers' films.)
Lyrics for an old classic
"I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" sung by Roy Rogers in King of the Cowboys (1943).
Roy Rogers always had to sing at least one ballad in his movies. I've found some of them to be quite the forgotten gem. I picked this one to write down first, and found out it actually has a detailed and astute pedigree.
"I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" is a comic song written by Johnny Mercer, and it was first sung by Bing Crosby in his Western musical film Rhythm on the Range, 1936. Backstory for the song itself: "Mercer and his wife were driving across the US en route to his hometown, Savannah, Georgia, after having apparently failed to succeed in Hollywood. Mercer was amused by the sight of cowboys, with spurs and ten-gallon hats, driving cars and trucks instead of riding horses. Singing cowboys were popular in films and on the radio then, and within 15 minutes, writing on the back of an envelope, Mercer transferred the image he was seeing into a song whose satirical lyrics vented some of his own bitter frustration with Hollywood." {Source: Furia, Philip (2003). Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer. New York: St. Martin's Press. p. 85]
There may be a couple other verses, but these are the ones Roy Rogers sings while playing the guitar, with quite a few nice smiles thrown in.
