Finally figured it out...
All this time, I always wondered why when I would do ad libs it would lack... but now I know after hearing my good friend Terrance’s cover of we all try, I noticed that the “key” is go up and down in pitch.
Lets say this is the middle pitch (B), and (A) would be lower in pitch and (C) would be higher in pitch. Sing your verse in B then go down to A towards the end of the phrase. do this about no more than 3 times, and then throw a B to a C.
Doing this will transform the melody and it draw your audiences attention, even if your audience is just you or your playback recorder.
Post.
My problem with this in the past was that when i was singing “we all try” it was an already high register for me. So by solely focusing on being in this range, I neglected my lower register. Just because you sing high, doesn’t mean you can’t throw a couple of notes into the lower register. It will truly bring the song to life.
