~ The Stream ~ 3-song “suite” drops in one week, concluding my releases for the year and bringing the total to a tidy 7, with a runtime of over 33 minutes… Hope you enjoy this introductory EP, before the full album is released in 2023! The first song from the new set I’d like to talk about is Glass Bead Game. Inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel and drawing on other generally Buddhist themes (which are shared by the other two songs in the suite), the tune is the latest in a practice of mine where I write about the lead character, and attempt to crystallize some moments from a great book. I’ll often use actual lines from the story, and pay tribute to their beauty by singing them. I’m not sure if this is considered plagiarism… Probably. Perhaps laziness, perhaps fascination with minds and stories more interesting than my own. I consider it an hommage, as well as a comment on the inter-relationship and reciprocity of the different arts and disciplines (which is also a principal theme of the book). Another example of this approach, where I do the exact same thing, is my tune “Devil’s Chapter,” based on East of Eden. (In fact based on just one chapter, Chapter 33). As for The Glass Bead Game (the book), I could go on and on about what it means to me and what I think it reflects from the world. But for this VERY BRIEF post I’ll just say that literature has played a huge role in my life, and naturally, in my writing... Thanks for listening to my songs, December 2!
