You were munching on one of the oatmeal cookies you had grabbed from the cafeteria that morning, as you moved around the classroom, placing the worksheets that would be worked on when the kids returned to class.
A knock on your door made you turn. Two men stood outside, glancing in at you through the window. “Can I help you?” You asked, opening the door.
“We’re here looking for a student.” They both reached into the inner pockets of their suit jackets and flashed badges, not really giving you a chance to look at them.
“Which student?”
“Victoria.” The tallest of the two answered. “We were told she was in this class.”
“Oh, they aren’t back just yet.” You gave them a polite smile.
“Could you get her? We need to take her with us.”
“Oh..” Your brow furrowed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get a message from her father that someone else was picking her up-”
“Badge, sweetheart.” The shorter of the two answered, and his tone almost annoyed you. “Kinda trumps a note, don’t you think?”
You gave him a sweet, but fake, smile and nodded. “I’ll just go check on her. Please, make yourself comfortable.” You gestured into the room. “Help yourself to one of the cookies, if you like. I’m sorry, I don’t have much in the way of refreshments in here.”
“We’re fine, thank you.” The tallest smiled.
You left, walking down the hall and could feel eyes on you. As soon as you were out of sight, you pulled out your phone. He had given you a number you could call when his daughter first came to the class. He insisted you have it in your cell phone, just in case. You figured it was a case of separation anxiety, and saved the number in your phone on the spot. You hadn’t used yet, but you were using it now. Hitting dial, you waited until he picked up.
“Mr Crowley? Hi, it’s Ms. Y/N, Victoria’s teacher.”
“Is everything alright?”
“Uhm..” You took a deep breath as you moved through the halls. “That’s what I’m calling to find out. Two men just knocked on my door and are claiming they are here to take Victoria.”
“Who?” It was more a growl then a word.
“I don’t know.. They flashed badges really fast I didn’t catch a name..”
“Two?”
“Mhmm.” You hummed and nodded as you came to the window that looked down at the gymnasium. You could see her running and laughing with the other students.
“One looks like a lumbering oaf and the other a moron?”
“Uh.. I-” You froze. “I was just wondering if I should call the authorities to verify who they are… or..”
“No, no, I’m close by. I can be there in a few minutes. Stall them if possible. Thank you for calling, Darling. I’ll see you soon.”
“Darling?” You muttered after he hung up and you looked at your phone. Glancing downstairs again, you watched as she ran, arching to avoid getting tagged before she dropped to the ground and crawled under another kids legs to unfreeze them. You smiled and turned back around, heading towards the classroom.
You found them both moving around the room, and one less cookie on your desk. “Victoria?” The tallest asked when you came in without her.
“They’re just finishing up in the gym. She should be back up in a minute. You don’t mind waiting, do you? They are playing freeze tag, and it’s her favorite game to play in gym. I can get you a coffee from the teachers lounge if you like?” You motioned back out into the hall and smiled.
“We’re fine, thanks.” The shorter of the two seemed almost agitated. You gave them a nod and went back to placing out worksheets.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.” You turned towards the man who, if it wasn’t for the two feet of space between you, would be towering over you.
“Have you had contact with her father? I mean, in general?”
“Of course. I’ve met and spoken with him a few times.”
“What’s your opinion on him?” The other man glanced over while they waited for you to answer.
“He’s very polite, always a gentleman.” You shrugged. “A doting father. Even sends in bake good for the bake sales. Always here for shows or projects..” Both their eyebrows shot up. “He’s like a lot of the parents, but more polite and better dressed.” You chuckled softly. “A little mysterious too. I don’t know much about him. Victoria doesn’t talk too much about home life, but she really loves her dad. Why?”
“Just curious.” He gave you a smile. “And Victoria herself? Anything.. odd about her?”
“Just freakishly polite like her dad.” You chuckled. “She’s an absolute joy to teach. No social issues, no academic issues.. She likes one on one time, occasionally will ask to step aside if other kids start fighting and it gets a little too much, but..” You shrugged. “She like any other kid who doesn’t like yelling. Honestly, I wish I could step out when it starts up.”
He chuckled softly and nodded. “I bet. How many kids in your class?” He looked around.
“Fourteen. So it can get loud.”
“Moose. Squirrel.” They turned to see Crowley standing in the doorway. “Why are you here?”
“You called Crowley?” The shorter growled at you. “Are you out of your damn mind?”
“I did my job!” You shot back. “I can’t just let anyone take someone's kid out of the school.”
“The secretary-”
“Should have informed you of school policy. If you have a badge, you need a court order. And even if you did have one, the school is to call and inform the parent before the child is permitted off the premises.”
He growled, but the other man put his hand out. “Dean, she’s doing her job. Just like us.”
“Where is my daughter?” Crowley asked.
“Gym. They come back up in about ten minutes.”
“Oh, so you lied to us?” Dean shot.
“Stalled. I asked her to.” Crowley glared at them. “Why are you sniffing around my daughter?”
“Is she really yours though, Crowley? Or did you snatch up another kid to raise to do your bidding.” Your eyes went wide and you looked at him.
“She’s my flesh and blood.” He growled out, obviously getting pissed but trying to keep himself composed.
“Too bad your flesh and blood aren’t from the same place, huh?” Dean scoffed.
“What?” You looked between them. “That- that doesn’t make sense… What the hell is going on?”
Crowley closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. “Sorry to do this, Darling, but we need a bit of privacy.” He snapped his fingers and you were gone. “I liked her.” Crowley glared at the two Winchesters. “I really bloody liked her.”
You had found yourself in a pitch black room that was too warm for comfort. And too small. You pounded on anything and screamed as loud as you could for help. When the door finally opened, you were blinded by the light. Rushing past the poor janitor, you hurried out past him and through the boiler room. Your classroom was empty when you grabbed your stuff and you left the building screaming “I can’t do this!” as the door shut behind you.
For three days you didn’t leave your home, but today you had to. You’d barely eaten for those three days. You didn’t get much, you just grabbed a few bottles of wine and some junk. You were still very much freaked out.
You walked back into your apartment, and went right to put your bags on the counter. When you turned around, you screamed and jumped, ready to bolt for the door.
“I’m sorry.” He said quietly. You grabbed a kitchen knife and held it out between the two of you. He chuckled sadly. “I’m afraid that won’t do much, Darling.”
“Wh-what in the hell are you?”
“The King, actually.”
“What?” The hand that held the knife lowered a bit in the moment of confusion, but raised back up again as his words sank in. “So what? you’re the devil?”
“No.” He laughed and shook his head. “Luckily for all involved, Lucifer is locked in the cage. No, I’m just the King.”
“You put the devil in a cage?”
“No. The two morons you met the other day, did. Moose, specifically, rode him down in there.” You furrowed your brow. “The tall lumbering oaf with the shaggy mop top. He's Lucifer’s vessel.” You turned your head slightly away and he sighed, a little frustrated with the explanations. “He's the human who can hold the angel without bloody exploding or melting.”
“Why are you telling me all this?” you tried to pull farther away from him but were already against the counter.
Crowley let the pain he felt show. “My daughter. She liked you. Very much. But now she is… depressed.” that word pained him most of all.
“She's a 3rd grader, what does she have to be depressed about?”
“You don't want to be around her anymore.” his eyes met yours. “Now that you know what I am, what she is-”
“What is she?” you started to shake. How could that sweet little girl be anything but.
“Anti-Christ. Half demon.” he held out his arms and motioned to himself. “Half human.”
“Wha…” you breathed out, your mind going instantly to the Omen movies.
He let out a deep breath. “Her mother was human. I went through a… we'll call it a rough patch, when I found my humanity again. I fell in love, like a fool. She became pregnant, had a baby, perhaps for a time there was happiness, I don't know. But hunters showed up, she found out what I was, what our daughter was. I returned home to an empty house, save for my little girl. Just three years old and crying for mommy with no one and nothing around.”
Your heart broke for her, the hand that held the knife firm lowered.
“She figured hunters would come back and end her. Maybe me too. I took my daughter back with me, but Hell is no place for a little girl. She was sad, and lonely. I did my best, but with work, well, it's difficult. And she's so afraid of being left behind again. She joined your class, and opened up. I've never seen her so happy.” he smiled. “But then you were gone, and she was told you weren't coming back. ‘Just like mum’ she said.”
Your shoulders dropped. He was probably just manipulating you, but you couldn't stop the ache in your heart. She was a sweet girl up until the moment you became terrified. You were looking down at your feet, the hand that held the knife was now resting on the counter. You were vulnerable, you knew it, but you were trying not to cry over the image of her crying, abandoned by everyone who should be there for her.
His hand was suddenly in your field of vision. You followed it up until you met his eyes. “I want to show you something. I promise, I won't hurt you.”
You eyed his hand, fingers slowly opening from around the knife before you placed your hand in his. In the blink of an eye, you were no longer in your kitchen, or in your home. You were pretty sure you weren’t even in your town anymore. “A-are we in… in hell?”
He chuckled softly. “No. I told you, hell is no place for her. She’s still far too innocent. I’d like that keep her that way as long as I can, given what she is.” You gave him a small nod, looking around at the stone walls. “This is where I’ve made my home, for now. For her. It’s hidden, protected, the outside world sees it as nothing more than an abandoned asylum.” He shrugged.
“Oh…”
“Come.” He began to walk down a hall, and you followed, glancing back behind you to reveal many more hallways. The one you went down only had one door, and it was open.
Glancing in, you stopped. Victoria sat quietly on the floor, toys around her but not playing with any of them. You could tell from her body language she was upset. Her back was to you, shoulders slouched and her head down. Every once in a while you heard a soft sniffle.
“She hasn’t left the room for days. Rarely is hungry. Doesn’t want to play very much…” He sighed. “Contrary to popular belief, I adore her. She is my daughter, and I want the best for her. But I’m not sure what to do right now.. I had hoped, perhaps, you could see past what I am. You love her in a way, I can see it, even now.” You looked at him. “Talk to her, Darling. Please.”
“Why do you keep calling me that?”
“Darling?” You nodded and he shrugged. “I like you well enough. Would you like me to stop?”
“Ms. Y/N?” You turned and Victoria was looking back at you, hope filling her eyes.
You gave her a soft smile. Despite everything, she was still a sweet little girl, right? “Hi.”
“They said you weren’t my teacher anymore.” She pouted. “Are you coming back!?”
“I-I don’t… I don’t know, sweetie.” You told her honestly.
“Oh..” Her shoulders dropped again.
“I need some time to think about it, okay?” She gave you a sad nod. You moved into the room and crouched down in front of her. “It was a lot for me, I was very scared and I left very quickly and I’m sorry that upset you. I really am.” You reached out a little hesitant and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “But you should be in school. You’re a very smart girl, and I bet you miss your friends too.”
“I miss you.” She looked up at you with her sad eyes.
You licked your lips. “I know. But I need time, Victoria. To think everything through.” She nodded again and got up, going over to her bed. She laid down and cuddle up with a stuffed white and blue cow that had a bell that gave off a soft jingle when it moved.
It had been two weeks since Crowley had shown up in your home. Two weeks since you saw the sad little girl. Two weeks since you're whole world was rocked beyond repair.
Taking a deep breath, you picked up your phone and dialed a number you hadn't called in two weeks.
She sat at a desk, watching a video intently. She either didn't hear you, or just wasn't paying attention as you moved up behind her.
“What are you watching?” you asked right next to her ear.
She gave a slight jump, head whipping around. “Ms Y/L!?” You gave her a soft smile. “I- I'm learning about arctic animals. Why are you here?”
You glanced at the screen and saw the documentary she was watching was currently talking about penguins. “I had time to think.” you told her softly.
“Are you here to say goodbye?” you could hear the fear in her voice.
“No, sweetie.” you smiled. “I'm here to tell you that I'd like to be your teacher again, if you'd like.” Her whole face lit up. “Not right away, it's going to be another week or two, but I want you back in school everyday. Your dad told me you stopped going again.”
She gave you a shy smile and looked down. “I missed you too much.” you smiled at that but tried to give her a stern look when she looked up again. You both cracked and smiled. “Are you going back home now?” she asked when she noted Crowley standing in the doorway watching.
“Nope. You dad is going to tell me all the important things I need to know to help keep you safe.” You smiled at her.
“I hope those mean hunters don't come back..”
“Like when you were little?”
She shook her head. “Moose and Squirrel.” she sounded much like her father when she said it. “ They want to kill me. Because I'm a monster.”
“Oh, sweetie.” You put your arms around her. “You're the sweetest little angel I ever met. And I'm going to do my best to protect you, okay?”
Her arms wrapped around you as well and she nodded. “I love you Ms. Y/N.”
“Love you too, sweetheart.”
She pulled away, a big grin on her face. “Wanna watch the rest of this with me?”
You glanced at Crowley who nodded that he didn't mind. “I'd love to.”
She grabbed her laptop, and hurried over to the bed so you could both sit together and watch. Once settled, she looked up at you. “Are you scared of me?”
You shook your head. “Your dad, maybe.” you teased and glanced over at him. “But not you.”
She giggled. “Daddy can be scary, but he's like a big teddy bear. Shhh, it's a secret.” She whispered.
“Oh, okay.” you whispered back, pretending to zip your lips.
Crowley watched with a smile as the two of you started chatting about what you were watching. His daughter telling you things you had missed.
“I knew I liked her.” he mumbled to himself. A demon came over and as he opened his mouth to speak, Crowley cut him off. “Not now. Family moment. Bugger off.” he snapped his fingers and the demon was gone.
You glanced over at him and he found himself smiling at you. When you smiled back, he knew he was in trouble.
