Ranting About Female Characters for Women's History Month*

(*I know it was last month, but these characters still deserve to be talked about. It's not their fault I got busy and distracted.)

Part 21: Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing

From: Hellblade (two anime series and a manga I never quite finished)

Description: Master of the Hellsing Agency and the only human who holds command over the extremely powerful vampire Alucard

Sir Integra was still a child when she learned the measures cruel men would go to try and take advantage of a hapless girl who had something they wanted. In fleeing from them, she comes face to face with Alucard, the dangerous nosferatu her father kept bound in a secret room. Rather than cower after watching him brutally slaughter several men, she meets his gaze with her own fierceness even as he threatens her life and refuses to be intimidated. In that action, she cements herself as the true heir to the Hellsing Agency, deserving of the servitude of Alucard and all within the household.

Then she takes out the uncle who was hunting her down herself.

Even as a child, Integra was not one to be sidelined, and she knew how easily people would do so for her gender. So she told gender norms to fuck themselves and started carving her own path. While she does not identify as male, she dons male clothes, and upon being knighted for her service to the crown, demanded the title of "sir" be added to her name instead of "dame" or "lady." Everywhere she goes, she demands she is treated with the same respect anyone would grant a man, and woe on they who refuse.

While her combat prowess is nothing compared to that of Alucard or even many of the lesser monsters the Hellsing Agency, it's still nothing to shrug at. She's a good shot and quite adept with a sword. People who think all her strength is solely in the organization she inherited find themselves unprepared when up against her iron will. She has no time for their shit.

Time and again, she makes it clear that if the Hellsing Agency is involved, then they're there to hunt monsters, and that's exactly what they'll do. She'll take down every one that crosses her path, and her people will take down the rest. They might think they can intimidate her, but what are they compared to Alucard, and she stared him down as a child.

He still tests her, from time to time, but she is not one to give in.

I've only ever owned one wall scroll in my life. Wayyyy back in the day, I got one of Sir Integra Hellsing. I admired her fierceness and her absolute disregard for gender. I wanted to be as self-determining and to command the kind of respect she did from others despite my gender. I wished I had the build and the resources to become a fighter the way she was.

For years, I hung it behind the door to my bedroom. Maybe not the best place for viewing, but she was sort of my good luck charm as I moved around through several houses in my 20s, desperately trying to find my footing. I wasn't sure where I would end up or if I could make it there in one piece, but I figured I could do worse than having Sir Integra Hellsing guarding my door.

And you know, no one who wished me harm ever passed through it while she stood watch, so maybe some part of her essence guarded it, after all. Or maybe not. She is a fictional character, after all.

I haven't hung it up in years, but I still have that scroll. I can't imagine parting with it. She's a character who means a lot to me, and who inspired me to be brave when I felt anything but. I know now I don't really have the personality to be her, but that's alright. She's still been an inspiration in my life, and as... questionable... as Hellsing can get at times, some part of me will always love it for all I learned from her.

Someday, maybe I'll cosplay as her. It seems appropriate, as I think I'll always hold a part of her inside my soul.

I started watching Hellsing yesterday and anyway guess who my new favourite character is

I've been watching Hellsing again and I have a lot of thoughts about it that I need to get out. The main crew (Alucard, Seras, Integra, and Walter) could be all compared to a horseman of the apocalypse. For me, I see Alucard being Death, Integra as Conquest, Seras as War, and Walter as Pestilence. My thoughts on the matter are all over the place, but it makes sense in my head.

Loyalty and faithfulness this act has a lot of representation in anime, movies and literature.

But for the one the one anime that represent these is Hellsing.

No one is more loyal and faithful than him (in my opinion).

To pledge your loyalty again to the same person when you come back from your supposed "Death"

Even though he could just decided not to since he's an entity that can exist 'everywhere and nowhere'

He still choose to return to her. His countess.

This is one of the animes where I didn't ship someone. It was fine if there was some romantic relationship between the two or not.

Because they have something more, more than being a master-servant, more than a friend, and more than a lovers. It was a deep bond that no existing words can define.
