SIRENS (1994) — dir. John Duigan
Watched Sirens (1994) and um, I think more sapphics people should watch it. Not to be gay on main but um....
She is literally stunning. My jaw is on the floor, my brain is malfunctioning.
Movie of the Day: Sirens
John Duigan's Sirens has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in the theater in 1994. I was about to graduate high school and trying to decide what to even do with the rest of my life. And then I saw this sensuous, intelligent contemplation on art, sexuality, religion, freedom, hedonism, meaning, and identity. A fictionalized version of the artist Norman Lindsay (played quietly by Sam Neill) and the trouble he got into with the church over his The Crucified Venus, it made me think very much about what I wanted out of life and what else just seemed... unimportant.
Though a mainstay of social media because of the nudity, the film didn't receive much notice despite critical acclaim and appearances on a number of year-end critics lists. I still find it quite joyous and whimsical, openly celebratory of the body without being furtive and obsessive. This movie is about finding your freedom.
Sirens was released in the US on March 4, 1994.
