name ten of your favourite characters and tag 10 people
Okay so I was tagged by @siriussilly which reminded me also @ladybrienne tagged me in this like a decade ago oops. Thank you both <3 So, here we go: 1. Gandalf Yes, Gandalf. He’s all flaring temper and mean remarks, but he’s merciful and kind. He is also all about helping people and empowering them to help themselves and others. He’s oceans worth of tears of sadness and joy trapped in a human form. He is a hero, a fighter, a teacher, a leader, an adviser, a diplomat, and just a tired old man on a long road. Also sometimes the way he puts things sounds 120% like me so I also kind of relate to him. Runner up in the same fandom: Galadriel, Boromir, Éowyn, Théoden, Frodo, Merry and Gimli (okay sorry but I could easily write a top ten favourites rant about these!) 2. Jaime Lannister Desperately searching yourself in a mire of conflicting loyalties and commitments, struggling with how the world sees you and how you see yourself, trying to find what you let define yourself. I think we’ve all been there, and that makes Jaime so relatable. But it was first his snark and arrogance mixed with a strong sense of self-irony that made me fall in love with him. He’s a jerk and he knows it, and sometimes he does crazy things for love. Also probably my ultimate problematic fave. Runner up in the same fandom: Brienne of Tarth 3. Lin Beifong She won’t take bullshit from you, but she will take a bullet for you anytime. And it’s not because she’s not as afraid as you are, but it’s because she's brave and selfless and A GODDAMN PROTECTOR AND HERO. Everyone she ever loved hurt her in some way, so she might be a bit salty and bitter, but that makes all the moments of humour and tenderness even more precious (yes there are those). Also she’s a drop dead gorgeous killing machine who also happens to be a middle-aged woman who gets an actual beautiful character arc of her own in a kids’ series. A+ Runner up in the same fandom: her equally fascinating baby sister Suyin, the chaotic evil to her lawful good 4. FitzChivalry Farseer The ultimate cinnamon roll with anger management issues and poor life choices. Oh, Fitz. He always does everything wrong but boy don’t you feel for him. Love and loyalty are what this puppy is made of, and horrible things keep happening to him. I cry. Runner up in the same fandom: Kettricken, my queen 5. Ged aka Sparrowhawk I don’t even know why I find his character so appealing. He makes mistakes, then he has to put them right. Idk? It’s just something about how he is. Also I realized he sometimes reminds me of my bf, so there’s that, even though I loved Ged before I loved my boyfriend, bwahaha. Runner up in the same fandom: Tenar 6. Andrea Harrison There are so many self-made survivors in this series, but for me her story has a special place (and I’m still shocked and bitter btw). Maybe because she was a bit like me - university background, a big sister, interested in the human rights. And she went through it all, the pain and suicidal thoughts, the learning how to fend for herself, and then how to survive mentally, and she became a fucking post apocalyptic world diplomat. And maybe she made bad choices sometimes but that makes the character so much better. I seriously need to rewatch. Runner up in he same fandom: literally basically all the major characters except poor Maggie who keeps getting ignored by the writers 7. Sarah Manning We need more female anti-heroes, alright? Especially those with a heart of gold and a bad mouth. Also watching this series is literally going “Sarah NO” at the screen every five minutes. I love it. (Also don’t get me started about the slow leadership arc she’s going through or I might die of fangirling.) Runner up in the same fandom: Siobhan Sadler amirite??? what a woman 8. Luke Skywalker He needs to be on this list because I’m super worried about what’s up with him in ep7 since they are clearly hiding him. Also because I love heroes who shed the naiveté but keep the idealism. Runner up in the same fandom: Obi-wan Kenobi and Leia Organa 9. Maedhros Because I have a thing for one-handed anti-heroes with oath issues, it seems… Runner up in the same fandom: Finrod Felagund and Haleth 10. Polgara the Sorceress, Dianora di Tigana and all the other ladies I made my heroes while reading fantasy as a kid/teenager when sadly so many of the books I read were quite crappy and even more of them very male-dominated. (Clarification: Guy Gavriel Kay’s books are not crappy, in fact he remains one of my favourite authors. But I could write a feminist critique of his work, and over the years Dianora’s story has gone from heart-breaking to a little melodramatic in my mind.) …and there’s so many I could still mention! Also whenever I said I usually don’t like the main character I was obviously lying. I’m tagging @watson-sighs-and-tuts, @gobeahero, @him-e, @mademoiselleviola, @tirairgid, @caffeinosis, @lady-arryn, @aeondecember, @beautyincolour and @decomposion
