Bihira kasi magkaroon ng content na naka-spotlight sa mga babaeng tauhan ni Rizal. So let’s give these deserving ladies a moment! 

Deserve din nila ng better treatment ano. Pero mas sikapin natin magkaroon ng mas magandang pamumuhay ang mga babaeng Pilipinong namumuhay ngayon kaysa magngawa ng “representation” para sa isang nobela na isinulat naman ng lalaking matagal nang patay.

Grabe I just spent the last few days on the el noli and basagani tags!!!!! Bye life!! Tanong lang meron bang "history of the el noli fandom" or sumn? Kung pano nagsimula? I assume it started here kasi kelan lang naman naging fandom focused ang Twitter

Bold of you to assume I know the History™ of the El Noli fandom! But, ok, you’re not entirely wrong. May alam akong kaunti. But I can only tell you from my perspective, aka when I came in. 

Disclaimer: Hindi ko inaangkin na pawang ako lamang ang “Main Source” ng fandom history. Baka may ibang gusto rin magsalita ukol dito. I encourage people to share and tell their side of the story, too!

Tama ka, nagsimula ang #el nolibusterismo sa Tumblr. (Shinortcut to el noli dahil sa character limit ng Twitter hehe.) Bandang 2014, wala pa talagang “fandom” or any form of community. Just a bunch of people who liked elibarra.

#Elibarra is important. Not because it is the first ship of the fandom, but because of elibarra, nagkaroon ng fan works for Noli, na magiging springboard later on to push for an actual Noli-Fili fandom. Content like fan art, head canons, fan fics were not so scarce but few. Maybe very, very few? Tipong, kapag may bagong content sa elibarra tag, SIGAWAN ANG MGA UTAW! ALAM AGAD NG LAHAT AT NI-REBLOG NA AT NI-LIKE AT SIGAWAN PA MORE SA TAGS! Ganern kauhaw. Ganoon din kaliit ang fandom noon; kilala mo kung sino si sino, or at least, ‘yung mga blogs na may fan art/ fan fics/ head canons. (Iyang tatlo ang mga bumubuo at bumubuhay sa fandom noon. Ngayon, I don’t necessarily think it’s strictly just these.) Back then, people didn’t necessarily belonged in a fandom yet. We just said, “Uy, siya rin, mahilig sa elibarra.” And that’s how most of us fangirl together lol.

Besides the elibarra tag, we also check out the Noli Me Tangere & El Filibusterismo. Siyempre, dahil ito ang official book titles, nandito rin ang mga students who just post their works for school activities. Then— I’m going to use the 1st POV in here because this is my personal experience— Then, I saw a person who posted na bakit daw shini-ship si Elias at Ibarra romantically. Bros lang daw sila. Obvious daw na Ibarra loves MariClar. 

It was THAT post that made me (over)think, maybe it’s time to have a fandom tag. Tutal, may group of people who like the book, and maybe we can expand the shippings! (*throws in penilaez and basagani*) We can also have discourse going around, throwing head canons and AU’s, without interfering with anybody’s school work. Para hindi rin “tainted ang kabataan” with the shippy nsfw stuff they didn’t ask for. 

I honestly spent weeks, months, thinking of a fandom tag. Came up with stuff like #noli-fili fandom/ #noli me filibustero/ #noli and fili, and of course, #el nolibusterismo. So, el noli, to me, felt like, “Ay, ito, puwede.” Then, kinausap ko ang mga ka-elibarra shippers (year 2014) to use #el nolibusterismo as a fandom tag. Ayun! The fan content then transferred to that tag that we use until today!

Most of the ship tags like marisisa, tadecson, tacaraig, basagani then followed. Si Tumblr user 1972ph ang unang nag-imbento ng elibarra tag, if I’m not mistaken. And Tumblr user earthsgayestdefender naman ang nag-imbento ng penilaez tag. If you’re interested na maghalungkat pa ng el noli stuff, I tag all my stuff since 2014. Feel free to browse this.
