Today (June 3rd) is the last day of Reconciliation Week. This week all over the world we've seen how much work there is yet to do - not just in the US but in our own backyards. Indigenous Australians make up 3% of the population yet represent 28% of the prison population. More than 400 deaths while in custody have been recorded since the 1991 royal commission into Indigenous deaths in custody. Today I have linked a GoFundMe in my bio which is started by Sisters Inside Inc., who work to support Indigenous women who are imprisoned - many of whom are single mothers and who are only in jail because they cannot afford to pay for fines for minor offences. The money in the GFM goes toward bailing these women out of jail. There is also a direct donation link on their website that goes to supporting the children of these incarcerated women. Infographic by @thedailyaus - please see their original post for more info and reference material. @guardianaustralia have also compiled a database of all the Indigenous deaths while in custody. #reconciliationweek #sorryday #indigenouslivesmatter #sistersinsideinc #indigenousdeathsincustody https://www.instagram.com/p/CA-MhnsjoKS/?igshid=1b86b80y08rdd
