Ahrjfn I think I talked about it before but I'm thinking again about a 'modern' AU where Rex and the other boys are actually brothers, just all really close in age and maybe Echo and Fives are twins. When I see them all in the same room I can make the joke "wow you all look so much alike! You could practically be clones." *laugh track*

I'm thinking maybe in this AU Rex is the oldest brother and maybe he's in the military (I don't like it but let's pretend this is a world where it isn't an immediate red flag!! he'll grow out of it anyway) and I meet Fives somewhere like an underground music club and become fast friends with him and the others, and when Rex comes home on leave and finds me hanging out with his bros he is immediately smitten 🥺🥺 they probably trying to set us up the entire time he's home and it's like a 'can we get them together before time runs out' kind of challenge

And when we finally DO go on a date, Fives and Hardcase are 'secretly' following us the whole time to make sure he doesn't blow it, they're talking to Jesse over a radio and giving the others updates the whole time. Fives takes Rex's military grade binoculars for spying purposes and I can't get this fucking interaction out of my head

Jesse, over walkie talkie: do you have a visual on the nerd?

Fives: affirmative...man, these binoculars are really powerful...he did trim his nose hairs! He's really taking this seriously.

A Bedtime Story

Grendel’s Mother: *sharing anecdotes with Beowulf and Hrothgar* ...so then I was like “No, I’m not dating a dragon, I am one!” *they all laugh*

Grendel: *knocks timidly on the door* Mother? I can’t sleep.

Grendel’s Mother: *quietly* aww, bless *to Grendel* just a minute, Gren, mommy’s busy.

Grendel: *enters room holding a copy of The Wind In The Willows* Just one book?

Grendel’s Mother: Oh, Grendel, I-

Grendel: Please? *puppy dog eyes*

Beowulf: Just read it to him, he’ll stand there all night if you don’t.

Grendel’s Mother: *sighs* Fine.

*an unspecified amount of time later*

Grendel’s Mother: *reading while petting Grendel* ...and so, disguised as a poor washerwoman, Toad escaped and set off to clear his name.

Grendel: *soft purring noises*

Grendel’s Mother: *sigh of relief* *under her breath* finally *turns to Hrothgar and Beowulf*

Hrothgar and Beowulf: *both asleep*

Grendel’s Mother: *thinking* is my voice really that soothing? *skims the next chapter of the book* holy crackers, he hijacked a train!

Zoey turned towards Mira’s voice as she entered, and practically felt her air leave her lungs.

She was in a suit. Not just some suit, a fucking nice suit. It was black, with matching pants and a white shirt beneath with two buttons undone. It fitted her perfectly, the very shape of her body matched by the fabric aside from where the jacket hung open. From nearby, Zoey heard the unmistakable sharp intake that was a gasp from the woman sitting on the couch, before a sudden increase in the speed of her typing.

There, on her bed and on the discarded towel, was the cat. It looked rather comfortable, sitting with its legs hidden under its body in full loaf-mode. It was facing her, too, with the eyes of a creature which would be squinting at her if it had the braincells to do so. Still, something about the way it was watching her put her off deeply.

“Shoo.”

It didn’t move.

“Poof!”

“Crash!”

“Why does it sound like you’re both just naming types of weed?”
