Hello! I absolutely adore your Through a Mirror Darkly series, and I was wondering if there are plans to continue the series?
Naaaaw, thank you so much! :D
Absolutely, we have a number of plans for our poor Sith (including a bit of therapy, because yikes, Obi-Wan deserves/needs a break). Amusingly enough, this universe has been active the last month or so, and we've been poking around the next chapter. Hopefully we get it down sooner rather than later (just...brick space and plague, y'know?)
Reviving from the purge, originally posted on 06/29/2017. Under a cut due to shipping and spoilers from down the road.
wait so is through a mirror darkly gonna turn out to be quiobi? i figured it wasn't, since they started out in the first fic as 12 and 47 and quiobi fic doesn't usually tend to address the early years when obi was severely underage
(re: this post, spoilers for Through A Mirror Darkly)
Eventually, yes, Through A Mirror Darkly is going to end up as Qui/Obi. It’s not tagged that way because I really do mean ‘eventually’ – we’re both rather squicked by massive power imbalances (teacher/student relationships are…easily bad), and everyone needs to be legal. I haven’t talked to Dogmatix ever about the difficulties in writing the gray areas when there’s a very small age difference and one partner hits the age where things stop being legal until the other partner ages up, and I have extensive and frustrated feelings about this, but that is obviously not relevant here.
In Through A Mirror Darkly, everyone is legal, everyone consents without power games or manipulations, not even be it implied, contrived, or imagined. Qui-Gon has many faults, but he is not a child-predator. And abso-damn-lutely we’re going to be addressing the age difference because that’s not something you can just ignore and everything is peachy keen. Relationships require communication and addressing issues like that.
Also, the relationship is very much a background item to the fic – it’s not meant as a romance, or a sweeping love story. It’s about Sith trying to find their way, struggling along in the Jedi Order, and what happens as they both grow and try to be more than their own initial, narrow definitions of just what ‘Dark’ and ‘Sith’ are. Their relationships with each other and the people around them are a part of that, but it’s hardly the focus.
I get this might squick people. We don’t tend to tag things that aren’t relevant to the actual chapters until we get to those relevant chapters, precisely because they aren’t even in the background of what’s going on. At the moment, Obi-Wan is 13. Yeah, he’s hitting some hormones, but he has just: managed to not age out of the Order; signed up to be a Sith; is maintaining status as a Sith in secret, AS part of the Jedi Order, right there in the Temple; survived his first war; managed not to get brain washed; saw people die; feels responsible for a friend dying; so much other drama. Relationships are not a thing he can handle for many years yet.
(No, really. I write trauma over relationships. If nothing else it’s how my brain works.)
Her eyes scanned the spartan room she had come to associate with her Master. It was less than a bedroom, but more than a study, and smelt faintly of smoke. Dangerous and intangible as the relationship between them.
“A word?” Without waiting for permission she knelt before the once meditating man. Under normal circumstances she’d have felt bad for interrupting such an important, and intimate, experience, but if she didn’t do this now she feared her resolve may crumble. No, this had to be done.
One hand rested over her stomach, the other tracing the hilt of her saber. He would accept this, or one of them would die. She saw no other solution. As if setting a broken bone she took one last steadying breath before speaking her mind, opting not to fear the fallout. Whatever happened, would happen.
