I survived a sitsit on the weekend, but I still can’t necessarily say I enjoyed it.

Each delegation had to make a presentation and most groups improvised something really quick. Our group was only 2 people, so we opted for a joke that plays itself — we simply played a short clip from the “State of the Smart” song. Unfortunately without the video.

Sitsit?!

Jaa niin mitkä? Laadukkaiden haalarimerkkien toimittajana törmää tähän sanaan monia kertoja päivässä ja sen tarkoitus ei ole kenelläkään jäänyt epäselväksi. Miksi käyttää sanaa juhlat ja bileet kun sana Sitsit kuvastaa ruokaa, juomaa laulua ja ohjelmaa? Sitseillä on yleensä joku teema, ja se kyllä näkyy haalarimerkeissä selvästi! Olemme tehneet sitsi haalarimerkkejä monella eri teemalla, on perus juhlapyhä teemat ja sitten kaikkea muuta maan ja taivaan väliltä: Enkeli sitsit, kummitus sitsit, Suomi sitsit, Aasi sitsit, jne. Voit melkein laittaa minkä sanan vaan ennen sitsi sanaa ja kyllä, me olemme tehneet siitä haalarimerkin.

On uskomatonta mistä kaikista eri teemoista Sitsejä saa revittyä. Haalarimerkkisuunnittelijat ovat erittäin nokkelia ja luovia: 10 pistettä ja haalarimerkkimerkki siitä!

I signed up to go to the National Meeting of English Students in Vaasa next month as part of the contingent from my uni. A lot of student academic subject organizations do an annual convention thing like this, which is mostly a huge sleepover party weekend and which invariably includes a sitsit and pub crawl / sauna night. And a couple of lectures just to make it nominally "academic". The different unis usually take turns hosting each year. I'm not even really an English major but I argue that I study English linguistics, so I have a membership for the English students organization here. Anyway, I couldn't make it to the equivalent event for Translation students (I kinda wanted to network) because of other things, so this is my last chance to go to one of these student convention things so I can write about it for Things That Are Different in Finland. A bunch of my Facebook friends were teasing me for planning to skip the sitsit. I mean, if there were a way to observe one without participating, I totally would. But since by being there you are kind of obliged to participate, I'd rather spend the time doing something else that I'd enjoy, like geocaching around town. I'm getting better at ignoring that kind of "but parties are the bestest/you're missing out!" teasing, but I don't think it'll ever completely stop bothering me. (When I was an engineering freshman some older students (girls (!)) were vocal of the attitude that if I didn't enjoy party drinking (I didn't and still don't) then I would "learn" to as an engineering student. Eff that crap.)
