Our Paczki came in two flavors: green mold and black mold

Friday was Paczki Day at our house, but not in a good way. Let me start from the beginning ...

In early February a friend of Sharon’s arranged to have a box of the pastries sent to our house, in time for Fat Tuesday.

Of course we were 900 miles away, on Hilton Head Island, so we told our neighbors who were monitoring our house for unexpected deliveries to enjoy them.

The package never arrived and we forgot about the whole thing ... until yesterday, when a parcel arrived, via the USPs, from Cops & Doughnuts. “Priority Mail,” no less.

I knew immediately what it was. We opened the box and, sure enough, floating in a sea of packing peanuts, was another box holding four individually wrapped Paczki.

I held one in my hand; it had the consistency of a rubber ball. The mold on its surface came in two flavors: black and green.

Since our mail was on hold at the P.O. throughout the month of February, it’s understandable why the package wasn’t delivered on time. However, i retrieved our mail - all of it, presumably - on March 2. So, the Paczki were moldering in some dark corner of the post office not only through all of February, but for the first 12 days of March as well, while we were home.

There’s no point in complaining to the Post Office; I would get the same answer I always get when something goes wrong with our mail: “There’s been a sub on the route.”
