Arctomys Monax: Maryland, Marmot, Woodchuck, Groundhog (1842)

Happy Groundhog Day!  John James Audubon (1785-1851) didn’t just paint birds, he also produced a work on mammals.  This image from 1842 shows both old and young groundhogs, or "Arctomys Monax."  HSP holds a copy of Audubon’s Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (1848) (Collection 3198).  Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of Winter this morning, but our Reading Room is nice and warm.  Come in and see some more of Audubon's work.

The Phil agrees with Weather Decision Solutions that 6 more weeks of winter will occur but that may extend another 2-3 weeks beyond that. February is going to be a very active month with winter storms crossing the country and shots of very cold air coming down as well.
