As an avid reader on FFnet, I can tell you the people on there are extremely childish, crass, homophobic, sexist and hate on every pairing that they feel undermines Hiccup's character. Eretstrid gets so much hate on there because Hiccup is always supposed to "get the girl."And it's okay and encouraged to write harem stories for Hiccup on there but try doing that for Astrid and they will get so pissed off. I once wrote a Heathstrid story and all I got was hate and requests on Hiccup joining in.
Yeah… that’s been my experience too. I started writing a story where, while Hiccup and Astrid were without a doubt endgame with each other (the first chapter is present day with them as a married couple with kids), half the story took place in the past centering on their relationships with other people. People were so pissed and were acting like I was an affront to the values of humanity because I dared to ship more than just hiccstrid. I also tend to write Hiccup and Astrid as having had romantic and/or sexual partners before getting together with each other, and people never bat a eye at Hiccup having past experiences, but I always get at least a few people who get their panties in a bunch over the idea of Astrid not being a virgin before meeting Hiccup. Like ????? That’s probably why I’m not going to post The Secrets Thief on there, because I think people would flip their shit over that story.
blackrose108 answered: that was one of the things that used to really frustrate me on ff.net back when I was writing. I wrote this adventure/friendship story and 95% of the reviews were asking me when hiccstrid was gonna be a thing >__> So no I don’t think it’s worth it.
sjhodge reblogged this from funkytoes and added:
It’s your story and if “they” aren’t mature enough to handle it, it’s 100% their fault. I have that frustration with…
Yeah, both of your replies are similar to my own experiences as well. Most of the comments on my fics on ffnet are requests/questions about when Hiccstrid was going to happen or to write a smut scene. I even got complaints on Moonlit Shadows because the sex scene wasn’t smutty enough for them.
I’m probably not going to post it there. Maybe eventually, but for now I’ll keep it on tumblr and post it on AO3.
Thanks for giving me your opinions, guys! Helped a lot :)
