The awakening
You are not confusing Mako, you simply didn't allow yourself to love her because of the circumstances.
I started reading an analysis about Mako and the love triangle, I haven't finished it, but it's point out that "Mako's main, overarching and core trait is his loyalty."
And that's interesting because he was loyal to everybody, but It felt that he was fighting against his own fellings. He couldn't be loyal for those he love and be loyal to himself at the same time
