Thinking about how that Fireworks day in YCNB1 was the ultimatum for Yoshino to settle things with Hatori but for Hatori that day was pretty much the day he would end everything between them.
Like the way Hatori chooses his words, apologizing and not asking for forgiveness, saying that it's best for him to be away from Yoshino, stating the editor change as a fact not a suggestion, changing his wording from "our department has the best editors" to "there's only skilled editors in the company"... if Yoshino didn't sense his intention to cut himself off from Yoshino's life, that would have truly been the end between them. Hatori would have quit Marukawa and move away without informing where he'll be working next or where his next address.
In Yoshino's side, it's like he'll have to choose if he would have Hatori as a lover so that Hatori would stay or remain friends and have Hatori distance himself... in a way it looks manipulative (even tho that wasn't the intention)... but Hatori's thoughts must have been "I am a harm to you and hurt you, I don't deserve to be by your side so I wanted to at least tell you my feelings properly."
Like, Hatori both understands and underestimates his value to Yoshino. He understands that Yoshino really loves him as a childhood friend but is completely convinced that Yoshino would be fine without him and would not even notice his disappearance.
But that itself would have been the ultimate horror to Yoshino. To wake up one day, not knowing where Hatori is, not knowing how Hatori is doing, and being unable to see, hear, or talk to him.
When backed up by how Yoshino was feeling throughout prior the fireworks scene and with insight of Hatori's side in his years of yearning, it was like their relationship of editor-author was the only thing keeping them together... and Hatori breaking that was a goodbye to what they had left.
Ironically, Hatori himself couldn't really bring himself to say that he plans to say goodbye. Like, the intention is Felt but he avoids saying it directly, he couldn't bring himself to answer the yes or no question that Yoshino asked him. It was really relying on the matter of Yoshino sensing Hatori's intentions...
anyways tl;dr Hatori would have disappeared from Yoshino's life after the fireworks if Yoshino didn't sense that intention and prevented it

When I was telling my brother about HoO he said Octavian reminded him a lot of Dwight Schrute. We had a lot of fun with the idea so I drew some of our favorites :) ♡ ʕ•̫͡•ʔ
