Before The Fear

Despite only having been in town a few weeks, it felt to Oogie as though he had always been there. He fitted into his slot in town like a jigsaw piece, taking authority over the other monsters as they busied about in readiness for the approaching Holiday. Some of the citizens had started referring to him as the ‘Lord of the Flies’, while others had simply named him ‘King’. No matter his title, he was intrigued by the structure of the town. Everyone was so happy, in spite of their macabre, gloomy surroundings. Too happy. There was something missing in this picture, he just couldn’t put his paw on what.
One morning, on his way to the Town Hall, he was cornered by one of the Vampire brothers who informed him that Jack had returned to Town, according to the reports from the ghosts. “Jack?” he repeated. “Jack the skeleton? The one you all keep talkin’ about?” “That’s right!” the elder Vampire agreed with a toothy smile. “And my brothers and I are sure that he’ll vant to meet you!” “Me?” Oogie’s brow raised. He’d heard stories of how horrifying this Skeleton Jack could be. A lanky monster that defied all proportion, with hollow eyes and pointed teeth. It was a gruesome image that filled the burlap ghoul with dread.
