Rhodes 1 night * Halki 4 nights. * Tilos 4 nights. * Nissiros 3 nights. * Kalymnos 6 nights.
Our Kate is the tutor on this year’s Greek Isles sketch Tour. We love the Dodecanese Isles and Diana, our tour organiser knows we like to change it up a little every two years when we’re there, so these are the islands she’s picked for us.
The group all met on an exciting Saturday night in Rhodes and began with hearing what lovely places they’d be visiting from both Kate and Diana, and getting to know their fellow sketchers.
The first island would be after Rhodes would be Halki. below we’re seeing some of the pics of everyone getting into their first day of sketching. You soon relax whether a first time sketcher or one of our experienced people, each creating their own memorable moments.
Watch this space for more form our Greek Isles sketchers.

Sketching in The Greek Isles
What a glorious Sydney Sunday we woke to. Eight enthusiast sketchers arrived at the Studio right on 10am, ready to meet each other and enjoy a tea or coffee.
Most people have had little sketching experience and it’s something about the freedom of it, plus the ‘only pleasing yourself’ approach which appeals.
We started with the lovely pink hibiscus and learning how to plan our page and observe the whole still life as shape and form. What great results from everybody. Very pleasing when you are enjoying the journey to feel that nothing matters. That’s our approach.
The first part of our Workshop is where we learn our sketch technique, with aquarelle pencil applied in layers. This lays the foundation for how we use watercolour.
Off to we trotted to the coolness and calm of Ivanhoe Park. Under dappled sunlight we studied the beautiful form of the Crepe Myrtle tree. A few lines and we had it in adding just a few layers of colour. With minimal sketch kit we can carry in our bags, as we did, then off we wandered for lunch at Girdlers Cafe and our watercolour lesson.
At our lovely big table joined up for us by the very helpful Girdlers cafe staff, we ordered a delicious lunch to help get our energy levels up. Sketching is quite demanding on our brain, so we need regular coffee and food intake. Good excuse!
Now we would re sketch a tree so that we could apply watercolours. Similar layering and similar colours are used and they looked stunning. As a little side sketch, we liked so much the bright coloured smoothies in jars which two of the students had ordered, so that became a quick sketch as well.
Do take a look at the very competent sketches done by our first time students today. Everyone did incredibly well and went home with 4 sketches, all of which they could feel very proud of. Hope to see you all soon the continue the journey.
Next ‘A Taste of Sketching’ Workshop – January 7 ’18.

A Taste of Sketching. Sunday Dec 10 What a glorious Sydney Sunday we woke to. Eight enthusiast sketchers arrived at the Studio right on 10am, ready to meet each other and enjoy a tea or coffee.
Our first Sketch&Dine at SketchBar was a huge success. We all love food. We all love wine. We all love sketching. We all love socialising with like minded people.
Here was the perfect combo.
Leo was on the pans, effortlessly turning out gorgeous share dishes which we all fell upon first to sketch and then to eat. Ivo the gorgeous surfing, salsa loving boy from Brazil was waiting on us hand and foot. AAaaaahhh.
Sue brought her oil crayons which she’s currently addicted to, so we all decided that’s what we’d use tonight. Very quick with good clear colours. Forget the detail – what detail! The essence of sketching indeed. Go like the wind, crayons flying – oh you’ve got the black – did you hear that – yes the black – so I’ll use the emerald or the fuschia – or the……. No trouble. Any colour on top of any other colour gets the job done. Then num num num. Licking of fingers. Pass the food around. Another sip of wine. Heaven on a stick.
Aaaah. Where would you rather be. Talk about happy. Doesn’t get any better than this. Fab fun. Night all.
Catch up soon with ‘A taste of India’ – Date to be decided. But Wednesday is our night.
Let us know if you’re interested.

Week1.Term2. Hibiscus & Vespas SYDNEY CLASSES - WEEK1 TERM 2 - APRIL 29 '17 Tuesday General. April 25 '17 Tuesday Evening New.
Week 5. Term 1. This was a week where unrelenting rain was promised every day- and it delivered. Admittedly there were breaks in the clouds and sunny periods did allow for quick sketching if we were lucky.
But Toni and Kathy had very cleverly planned an indoor week for General Sketchers at the impressive Harley Davidson showroom. And it’s been a huge success.
Our theme of thumbnails, light and heavy line work certainly translated well to motorcycles and all the wheels and shiny things that goes with that.
The fact that they have a cafe sealed the deal. Naturally.
New Sketchers studied flat perspective and watercolours this week between downpours, with some fun side exercises thrown in.
For each of our locations finding that house/building/shop was the challenge.
As you’ll see in the sketches we found some wide and varied architectural styles and we captured the character of them all.
For one, our sketches even had the look of a French Chateau though that would not have crossed your mind if you’d seen the original. All part of what we sketchers can do with an everyday subject.
It’s been another exciting week so now on with the show.

Sunday December 18 ’16. Sketch your Cake Open Day.
The doors opened early and Anna arrived with masses of boxes filled with – well we had to wait and see! Sue brought her beautiful cake plates and stands so we could carefully create a displays with samples of all the cakes available. The yellow tablecloth from France was laid out and fitted perfectly across the white tables. Now we were looking good. Many orders were in those other boxes so we weren’t allowed in there of course.
First thing was coffee. Everyone was keen on that and it gave us a kickstart to open our books and think about sketching. People began to arrive, and were very excited by the cakes laid out. Each one would take a seat and choose their subject and even get to sample some of the display.
The day was very relaxed as people dropped in, some just to pick up orders and others to sign up for New Sketchers next term. Two of our new recruits had a go at sketching with some tutoring from Anna, and did remarkably well. Most stayed on and did several sketches – with a view to sampling the wares and letting everyone know their thoughts. More like sighs of divine satisfaction I’d say. Milton tried one of the Salted Chocolate Truffles ( being a chocolate addict) and I think he thought he’d been transported to heaven. We have a box of 12 in the fridge – which will last till Christmas if no thefts take place.
By late in the day everyone picked up their orders some added a few more for good measure. Others even returned with friends for 2nd serves. By the time we had loaded up Anna’s big van with empty boxes there were no cakes left at all. A very successful day for catching up with friends, sketching and tasting and thinking that life was pretty good. You can run your mouse over the cakes below to see who the sketcher was. Taking a teaspoon to them will not allow you to eat them unfortunately. But you can order more from Anna
Thank you to everyone for being such great company and we may make this an annual event. What do you think!
