Our first Sketch&Dine at SketchBar was a huge success. We all love food. We all love wine. We all love sketching. We all love socialising with like minded people.

Here was the perfect combo.

Leo was on the pans, effortlessly turning out gorgeous share dishes which we all fell upon first to sketch and then to eat. Ivo the gorgeous surfing, salsa loving boy from Brazil was waiting on us hand and foot. AAaaaahhh.

Sue brought her oil crayons which she’s currently addicted to, so we all decided that’s what we’d use tonight. Very quick with good clear colours. Forget the detail – what detail! The essence of sketching indeed. Go like the wind, crayons flying – oh you’ve got the black – did you hear that – yes the black – so I’ll use the emerald or the fuschia  – or the……. No trouble. Any colour on top of any other colour gets the job done. Then num num num. Licking of fingers. Pass the food around. Another sip of wine. Heaven on a stick.

Aaaah. Where would you rather be. Talk about happy. Doesn’t get any better than this. Fab fun. Night all.

Sketch&Wine. Wednesday April 12 ’17.

Mixed Media Sketching using twigs, bamboo pens, Ink, watercolour, Oil crayon, White gel pens, Spray glitter, Glitter nail varnish – on textured or coloured papers.

On a rainy night what better to come inside our warm and inviting Studio and play with creative sketches and ideas. Mix with friends, drink some wine and laugh yourself silly.

We had the pleasure of a 14 yr granddaughter who thoroughly enjoyed having a go at all the inks, crayons, glitter, for her still life sketches, punctuated with nibbling chocolate eggs. No rules here. Help yourself.

The plan was to sketch any of the several Easter Flower and choc bunny, chickens or eggs. Some hadn’t used twigs with ink before. We showed a few tryouts for everyone to see and show changing inks will give you a loose look you won’t get with the control of a pen. Yum. The toss some watercolour on. Try some Oil crayons and rub you finger trough it for smudge value. Squeals of delight. Black paper with dripping ink marbling. Add some glitter. Somehow nothing looked finished till we added some shine and glitter. Is this the start of something!! Not sure how this will work on our Venice sketches – but who knows!!

A great fun night. Cheese and crackers and nibbles demolished. Wine all gone. Must be home time. Out into the night we all went with our lovely artworks there to remind us that anything goes.

Sketching Week 8, Term 1. Saturday March 25 ’17

It doesn’t seem to matter which country in the world you talk to people in, they too have had big changes in weather. We changed our program once again to keep all our sketchers dry! A fancy shopping centre was our Studio this week.

Warringah Mall in Sydney has been all flossied up and now a pretty smart place. Sketching shapes in an interior were our mission for General classes. So if you have exterior perspective worked out, how will you do with interior shape? As always we lead you through the simple ways to see vanishing points. Well done everyone.

New Sketchers were looking at Intrinsic Shape. What makes an apple an apple, a lemon a lemon and so on. Once you see the clues to this you’ll always make your sketches work. I must admit my Thursday class did interiors extremely well at Thomas Dux Fruit market. A bit advanced at this stage but they were ready as you’ll see!

As always our weekly program is very flexible. For class in other locations, we find something similar so that the challenges remain. How about a Gelato Bar or Flower Market. All part of learning to sketch whatever you have around you.

MANLY CLASSES

Week 7 and another big week. Big rain. Big sketching challenges. Big progress

New Sketchers have just discovered that ‘People sketching’ is not as terrifying as they’d thought.

Everything, even human formS are shapes. It’s just a matter of seeing them. And ‘see’ they did. We keep our exercises very quick. Get your book, eye and pen ready and go go go. Some classes tried ‘contour sketching’ – sketching your person without looking at the page. We loved it. So much laughter. If you had any ideas about how lovely you look as a rule – well don’t be offended!

Most classes were avoiding rain but wherever you were, there were plenty of models to sketch, also sheltering from the wet.

General classes had a lovely time mainly inside working on ‘glass still life’ sketches. So many different glass vases, bottles, bowls, jugs to work with. This was a good time to try a whole range of mediums. Everything from thick  line sketches with texture,  watercolour paint, and oil pastels, crayons to name a few. Such great results.  You also réalisé how much the medium you choose dictates the style your sketch will take. Fascinating.

SYDNEY CLASSES WEEK 6 TERM 1 ’17

Week 6 Term 1. March 11’17

We were again planning well ahead for our locations this week, in case of rain. Actually we had less than last week but our venues were spot on.

New Sketchers all managed to sketch eye level perspective on location without too many rain drops. Our students whether in Manly, Mona Vale, Blue Mts and The Rocks all found brick buildings with a good corner where they could see the concept for themselves.

We’re always fascinated with the variety of buildings we end up with. Most you’d never look twice at, so we do understand the puzzled expressions of the passersby.

A Sketchers life can be full of challenges but we achieved our aim.

General sketchers were studying interiors at Manly Art Gallery.Such a beautiful venue and the exhibition on at the moment is part of Art Express. Selected works by the students doing art for their major exams in Australia- the Higher School.

Our sketchers were very taken with the depth and layering of the messages conveyed and sketched many of the artworks themselves.

Thursday nighters were sketching the very complex upstairs interior of Ivanhoe Hotel. A well lit spot, excellent food, and a great range of drinks, all make the pen loosen up.

Another fantastic week for our students and it’s so rewarding to see everyone overcoming challenges and constantly progressing. Homework this week is to try another eye level perspective and really try to understand it. More excitement next week.

  MANLY CLASSES. Saturday Feb 25 ’17

Week 4 and we’re all much more confident. We’re feeling more free with our lines and looser with our colour.

For New Sketchers it was first time trying watercolour and something we all look forward to. We’ve learned the colours and layering in aquarelle so now we do it in paint. Two convenient and portable ways to use colour.

As with our carefree impressions we take the same approach with colour. Apply where we think it needs it. This is not colouring in. In fact some sketches need little if any colour. It depends on how you’re feeling at the time.

But nature was also a connecting factor this week between New Sketchers and General.

The Rocks, seed pods, feathers and tree forms were also a subject for our cross hatching General Sketchers. Though I can’t explain the chocolate on a wet day which the Saturday General class were indulging in. Oh yes. Cross hatched chocolate. Good, there is a connection!

Cross hatching is a very meditative way of applying tone to a sketch. Criss crossing this way and that to make light and dark. Such a strong look and by picking just one colour to go behind can make a dramatic sketch.

At no point in our sketching are we trying to get a ‘likeness’ or copy the exact look of the subject. As I say often. ‘The subject is there purely for me to get my sketch down and then I no longer need it’. I then work on the the page and get that looking as I want it. Then I’m happy.

That’s why we sketch. It’s not even about the end result. Just enjoying the doing.
