Hi! Random follower who happens to work at a pet store, noticed that you've been fear about yer new birby friend. Just wanted to tell you do not fret! Parakeets esspecially need a great amount of time to adjust to their new habbitat and can take up to 3-4 weeks to become fully comfortable! I encourage you to take him out every day. If he isn't comfortable stick your hand in his cage and relax. Stay calm and relaxed and wait until he stops fluttering about. (Sorry if you already knew all this!)
thanks for the advice! i've been really hung up on trying to get Pen to get used to me and i've been hesitant to stick my hand in the cage because just me being near the cage scares him lol. and at the moment cage door opens = something scary and stressful is about to happen [despite my efforts to do the opposite lol]. combine that with his food dish being attached to the cage door and not wanting him to get hungry and stress more over that i'm just like ???? ok bud i'm gonna keep out of ur way and play the music u like to sing to take ur time.
it might come down to just more persistence on my part with me sticking my hand in the cage a few times a day until he calms down around it. but apart from that his disposition is just generally unconfident, fretful, and desperately wanting the company of other birds. i don't play bird sounds anymore but last time i did [inadvertently] he flipped out and for the first time ever showed interest in getting out of the cage.
it just kills me to see him so unhappy and lonely... so i'm still committed to going out and finding him an outgoing friend. i'd rather have 2 happy semi-tame birds than one unhappy, lonely one lol.
