Four ski huts documented by Emma Longcope / @emma.longcope

1. Tagert Hut perched in Colorado’s Elk Mountains. A luxurious basecamp for the incredible multitude of ski mountaineering descents nearby. 

2. Mint Hut, accessed from Hatcher Pass, this hut is the first step of the Bomber Traverse in the Talkeetna Mountains in Alaska. The cozy structure, maintained by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska, was built in 1971 and is painted red to stand out from the nearby glaciers.  

3. Bomber Hut, is a tin hut is the second step of the Bomber Traverse in the Talkeetna Mountains, and is also maintained by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. Accessed via glacier and mountain pass, this little structure provides a respite from the wild, windswept tundra it sits upon.  

4. Snowbird Hut was built and maintained by volunteers of the American Alpine Club, the Snowbird Hut is often the final stop upon the Bomber Traverse of the Talkeetna Mountains. If you can find it and are an AAC member, the hut is free.

this restaurant is where I waited for several hours on the sun to set so I could shoot the sunset colours on the mountains behind me. it’s perched on top of a ski lift and is actually far bigger then seen in the picture. it has two floors set into the mountain besides the one you see here. 

Since the restaurant had already closed at 4pm, I read a book waiting on the sun to set. every once in a while I’d check if the colour of the sunlight hitting the mountains had changed yet. seeing how the photos turned out I’m really happy I stayed up there despite the restaurant being closed. 

as a bonus to shooting the sunset on the mountains, the sunlight hit the clouds perfectly while I was snowboarding down after the sun had disappeared behind the mountains. 

funny enough this is one of the very few times where I got to plan my shots, since I usually shoot while hiking. and therefore don’t really get a say in the conditions or time of day i shoot a particular scene in, other than starscapes.

I built a this hut a few years ago with a two friends for $400. We use it solely for hiking and ski touring. Sleeps 3 (tightly).

A ski hut tucked in the Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska

Alaska is one of the best places to drool over cabins and huts. There are so many hidden all over that you’ll likely stumble across one while cross-country traversing. Always travel with a beer in your pack because by the time you get up to one of these you’ll want to take a moment to have a drink. This hut is covered in snow a large part of the year and therefore only accessible by ski or snowshoe. It sits at a high elevation and is surrounded on three sides by steep mountain walls.
