My heart goes out to Andrzej Stękała, a Polish ski jumper, who came out to the public on New Year’s Day, January 2025. He also announced the death of his partner, Damien, who passed away in November 2024. Andrzej and Damien had been together for eight years, but kept their relationship secret, hiding it from the public.
"For years, I have lived in the shadow of fear, in disguise, fearing that who I really am might destroy me… I wondered for a long time if I would ever find the strength to write these words. What I am going to write now is the hardest thing in my life… Today I don't want to run away anymore."
Andrzej explained on social media that he met Damien in 2016. Damien became "my rock" and "my biggest supporter".
"Together we shared life, passions, joys, and difficult moments… I know that (Damien) would want me to continue living in peace with myself.”
Stekala thanked the friends and family who have "been there" for him throughout the years.
“Thanks to you, I find the courage to open up."
Stękała is a member of the Polish national team. He won bronze medals in the Ski Flying World Championships (2020).
