"Mom? Can you make a Skibladner cake for my birthday?" "Suuuuure…." Meh… it's close enough isn't it? 😅
I had to make it chubby and short to fit inside the cake box... XD

When the captain himself invites you for a late trip with this grand old lady and even offers to drive you home afterwards, you just can't say no!
I dragged my coworker Petter (we're both working at the NRM this week) along and we had a nice travel with Skibladner, who is 170 years old this year btw! That makes her the world's oldest paddle steamer still in regular service and Norway's only remaining paddle steamer. She runs the same route today as she did 170 years ago. She has also sunk twice as many times as the Titanic…
We got to spend most of the time onboard in the engine room, which was a first time experience for Petter. We also got to experience a fire drill, which they have weekly. That was also an interesting experience!
We had a fun trip despite sailing straight into bad weather!
Skibladner is a badass little ship. <3 The world's oldest paddle steamer still in timetabled service. Sunk twice as many times as the Titanic and still running strong to this day! She had her original engine replaced in 1888, but the engine she has today is the one from 1888, so it is 137 years old! Let that thought cross your mind when you stand next to it, watching it work, listening to its steady beat... She's been to the bottom of the lake twice... but was brought back each time. Even if they considered leaving her there the last time it happened... but the local people were ready to riot if they didn't salvage her, so... they did. And she has now been running the same route for 169 years... You can read more about her here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skibladner And never... in my wildest dreams had I ever imagined that I would stand at the helm of this legendary ship!
But the captain insisted on having me try. And it was so much fun! There were strong winds, so I really had to wrestle her to keep her straight as she is a paddle steamer that doesn't go very deep into the water and has a very small rudder, so she insists on going more sideways than straight forward in strong wind... but it was such a fun experience and probably a once in a lifetime experience too. As we got closer to the dock I handed her over to more experienced hands and watched how they maneuvered her to the pier with great precision. It never stop impressing me. For those wondering, yes I did know the captain from before, I wasn't just randomly put at the helm. lol. We share a common interest in steam machines and met at a seminar last year where I held a speech and we've kept in touch since then. I also signed some books for his sons that he had bought earlier. He invited me to the ship personally along with my husband and daughter, so we were given a tour of the engine room and was invited to the bridge. But being put at the helm was unexpected!
Definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life!
It's raining. Everything is grey, and I'm cold. But today I'm happy, 'cause I just found out that I could hide myself under the roof of the outside part of the restaurant, have my take away coffee, watch both the old steam boat Skibladner and the Mjøsa lake, and make up my mind about a thing or two.. #philosophical #skibladner #mjøsa #tuesdaymorning (presso D/S Skibladner)

Hva skjer? Skjønner at det er lite vann i Mjøsa, men det ser ut som Skiblader'n ligger på grunnen gitt! Blir den ikke ødelagt? #skibladner #passerpå @gjovikby @opplandarbeiderblad @vgnett (presso D/S Skibladner)
