MONDAY means there’s a new @cleanbeautypodcast episode — it dropped a few hours ago with Wendi, founder of @kudaratskincare - a gluten free skincare line that I absolutely LOVE! ✨🧪 Wendi is a former geologist, and co-author of Women Who Influence. She had ovarian CANCER and several autoimmune diseases. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her so she took her life into her own scientific hands and threw out her beauty products. When she slowly began reintroduced products back into her life to figure out what she was reacting to, she found that even even the “best” skincare products were based with Parabens and other toxic ingredients. She started formulating her own products and her friends urged her to share them to others. In the beginning it is very easy to get lost in the jungle of ingredients, there are so many to choose from. As a formulator, it will be your job to choose suitable oils, butters and botanicals for your product. It is just as important to blend these ingredients together in a way that we preserve their skin-nourishing properties. For instance, certain ingredients are sensitive to high temperatures, such as some preservatives or certain carrier oils. . Some butters such as shea butter can be better cold blended, as they can become gritty when heated (many formulators will have experienced the curse of the grainy balm!). Other butters such as mango butter can be quite gritty when cold-blended but become smooth through heating. It’s good to experiment with your butters on their own before you mix them. Being prepared to experiment is what makes a good formulator and distinguishes you from recipe followers. . Want to become an organic skincare formulator? Yesterday we added a new graduate, Marie Rayma @marierayma, to our prestigious Student Hall of Fame because of her stunning final project for her Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation. . When we designed this course assignment we wanted to give our students clear project guidelines, but at the same time we wanted to see how our students use their skills and how they’d pair it with imagination to create a winning formula. . Marie did just that. She presented a fantastic, ultra-hydrating hand lotion. She used lovely ingredients, she found a solution to the issue of the soapiness created by the emulsifier. The essential oil blend is simple yet stunning. . Marie’s assignment covered every single tiny detail you can think of, how the product is stored, used, when and by whom. She summarised how the ingredients work together and what the idea is behind using the amount specified in the formula. . This outstanding study project shows very clear research, references as well as personal views and observations. Congratulations Marie, you did an amazing job and wowed our Education Team! .
