Verdun's fate hangs on the relative strength of these two cannon-the Austrian 12-inch "skodas" at the top with which the Germans before Verdun are equipped, and (below) the French 75's The Teuton guns must be anchored securely in great concrete beds before they are fired, and only a half dozen shots a day are used. They are easily dismantled and transported, however. The French guns, on the other hand, shoot with the rapidity of machine guns, sending shot after shot in a continuous rain of death into the German trenches
