Skrimmbos ship rambling under the cut, beware spoilers all ye who enter

Look I do reasonably get why in most Skrimmbos stuff, Skrimm is usually the one trapped in the Pits of Pining and very understandable bc he's got that low self-worth + obvious admiration gayass combo going on (I stg he will glaze Barnabos at any chance he gets lmao). That plus Barnabos' obvious hangups on his last relationship (understatement of the century) lends well to doomed "he'd never go for a guy like me" yaoi.

However. I feel like there's untapped potential in Barnabos yearning. Barnabos is literally THE Yearner. He yearns as easily as he breathes air. This man puts his whole heart into anything he does and has never been normal about loving anyone ever. I think it would take a lot of time to get to that point of falling in love but once he does, there's no stepping back from it - he's in every sense a romantic, led by his emotions. He lost the last person he fell in love with and that experience has literally shaped every day that followed for him. He could write a treatise on the fine art of longing.

I want to see him in fits of despair over it. I want to see him internalise the shame, thinking that holding these feelings for someone else equates to an unfaithfulness to his lover, even after all this time. I want to see him worried he'll intimidate Skrimm, who is comparatively laid-back about this sort of thing, and scare him off with the intensity of how much Barnabos feels - he knows he's a lot, he isn't about to change that, but it would sting to have that turn someone he cares for away from him.

More than anything, I want to see him constantly deny himself out of fear of having to live with that loss again. Dangerous lifestyle notwithstanding, tritons can live up to 200 years. The average lifespan of a goblin is what, 60 years? 65, if we're generous? The likelihood of him outliving Skrimm is exceptionally high. He's very aware of what that loss did to him the first time around. He's not sure he'd survive it a second time. Curse his cowardice, he might be too afraid to find out.

Give me Barnabos waking up one day to realise he's fallen in love with his friend and speedrunning the five stages of grief about it. Give me Barnabos and his weird hangups about men and women, being unsure as to how pursuing a bloke romantically is supposed to go. Give me Barnabos desperately trying to keep things casual between Skrimm and himself, and failing miserably. He doesn't know the meaning of casual. His heart swells whenever Skrimm makes a joke only for Barnabos to hear or starts a petty argument with him or grabs onto him when he's afraid - he's damned if he does anything about it, damned if he doesn't. And when he starts to mentally put Skrimm up on that pedestal of devotion, Skrimm being as fallible as he is will obviously let Barnabos down in one way or another. He needs to reckon with learning to love a person again and not just a memory. Doomed yaoi from the POV of the worlds most ardent yearner.
