This is a Lady Sheaffer XVI Moiré cartridge fountain pen c. 1958-1960. Moiré is a fabric, usually silk, with a wavy (watered) appearance created by a finishing technique called calendaring. This 5 3/8 inch long pen features an etched moiré pattern on a gold color finish, a gold-plated center band with a raised ring filled with clear rhinestones. Mandarin Red nib section, Sheaffer’s number 19 Vermilion color, and a gold nib. This example has a two tone gold nib and some finish loss spots on the barrel. This is a shot of the twenty standard model Lady Sheaffer pens photographed for the “Lady Sheaffer 1958–1964: A Gallery” article in the upcoming Summer 2020 Pennant. The Lady Sheaffer advertisement in the May 1958 issue of Vogue was the first by Sheaffer in a fashion magazine. Ads were also run in Mademoiselle, Life, Reader’s Digest, The New Yorker, Ebony, This Week, and Parade. Newsreels were provided to movie theaters and television stations. Elaborate counter and window displays were distributed to traditional dealers and fashion counters. There is much more about these pens in the article. This is a Lady Sheaffer XVII Brocade Skripsert cartridge fountain pen c. 1958-1960. Brocade is a fabric woven with an elaborate design, especially with a raised pattern. This 5 3/8 inch long pen features an etched brocade pattern on a silver color finish and a (probably) chrome-plated center band with a raised ring filled with clear rhinestones. Jet nib section, Sheaffer’s number 11 Black color, and a gold nib. This example has some missing rhinestones, a two tone gold nib and some finish loss spots on the cap and barrel. This is an undocumented and uncatalogued Lady Sheaffer pen c. 1959. This clipless model features a black enameled metal cap and barrel with an engraved gold filled fish scale pattern that looks like a partial rendition of the Paisley pattern. The section is Jet black color to match the cap and barrel. The palladium silver nib is not hallmarked.  Given the nib section and pattern, this pen appears to be a test of a $10.00 price point pen.  The pen is about 5 3/8 inches long capped.  It's possible this is a prototype or a short run model.

This is a Lady Sheaffer XXXV Damask fountain pen c. 1959. Damask is a reversible woven patterned fabric made of linen, silk, cotton, or wool.  The Lady Sheaffer XXXV Damask has an etched gold diamond pattern on a silver finish.  The pen has a raised ring filled with white rhinestones.  The nib section is Ivory, Sheaffer’s number 5 White color.  The nib is unhallmarked gold.  The fountain pen sold for $35.00 and the matching pencil sold for $10.00.  This is one of the hardest Lady Sheaffer pens to find.

This is a Lady Sheaffer III Corduroy c. 1959.  This clipless model features a Jet color enameled metal cap and barrel with engraved lines and gold color fill Sheaffer called Corduroy.  The section is Jet black color to match the cap and barrel.  The pen is about 5 3/8 inches long capped and has the correct palladium silver nib, which is not hallmarked.  It sold for $10.00 and the matching pencil sold for $4.95.  The packaging was a large elaborate oval paperboard cylinder similar to a cosmetics package, which included a cloth pen and pencil holder and separate ink cartridge holder.

This is a Sheaffer Cartridge Pen and pencil set in Pastel Blue c. 1957. It's a 5 3/8 inches long cartridge only fountain pen that has a similar length and look as the more expensive Sheaffer Snorkel pens. The pen fills by unscrewing the nib section from the barrel, dropping in a Skrip ink cartridge, and screwing the nib section back on so that the metal nipple pierces the cartridge and starts ink flow.  The cap is polished chrome with chased lines and the barrel is molded plastic in many solid colors.  As many as nineteen are listed in the 1962 Sheaffer's Service Manual.  The barrel is stamped with the W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. imprint.  The medium stainless steel nib is stamped SHEAFFER'S over 305 over MADE IN U.S.A.  The fountain pen was $2.95 and the pen and twist action pencil set was $4.95.

This is a Sheaffer Fineline Cartridge Pen in Black c. 1955. It's Sheaffer's first cartridge pen, introduced in 1955, and was advertised as "The fountain pen that fills like a ballpoint!"  It's a 5 3/8 inches long cartridge only fountain pen that has a similar length and look as the more expensive Sheaffer Snorkel pens. The pen fills by unscrewing the nib section from the barrel, dropping in a Skrip ink cartridge, yellow end first into the barrel, and screwing the nib section back on so that the metal nipple pierces the cartridge and starts ink flow.  The cap is polished chrome with chased lines and the barrel is molded plastic in Blue, Grey, Green and Black.  The clip barrel is stamped FINELINE.  The medium stainless steel nib is stamped FINELINE over 305 over MADE IN U.S.A.  The fountain pen was $2.95 and the pen and twist action pencil set was $4.95.
