For Whom the Bell Tolls
It was a single chime that sang throughout the Underground. The desolate world where monsters once thrived was hushed into an even colder, haunting silence. It was as though a single touch and everything would shatter into tiny shards of glass. At the end of the pathway leaving out of Snowdin and into the beginnings of Waterfall, Sky stood petrified in place.
Eye lights had vanished from sight, leaving the dark deep holes of his eye sockets black and emotionless. His mouth was a small, thin line to his face, body ridged and unmoving. The bell chime was low and gothic, as one might hear resounding from an ancient Cathedral. It reverberated off of every surface in the Underground, her origin cry from the heart of the Underground city. At last the sound waves faded away leaving only the faintest sound of falling snow around Sky.
With a single step back, Sky collapsed to a knee, his small skeletal frame quacking. The sound of the chime continued to ring within the confines of his skull, reminding him of that day. Choking out a panicked cry, the small skeleton slid and stumbled over his boots in the thick layering of snow, speeding himself past his home and into the heart of Snowdin. Skidding to a halt at a sharp, sideways angle, Sky nearly crashed the door open into Muffets Diner. Inside the female spider was already moving herself from behind the counter, preparing her search for the small skeleton. It seemed today she would not need to.
Four arms opened, capturing the frightened skeleton as he threw himself into her. Both collapsed to their knees on the floor of the diner, Muffet hugging Sky tight as he sobbed and babbled incoherently. One of her hands stroked his skull as she hushed him gently, the spiders heart aching for her tiny companion.
“Sans, it is okay. The news just reported a single monster fell today due to old age. It is not happening again, I promise you. Calm, Sans. Calm...”
Only two other monsters resided in the room, sharing a single booth. They watched on empathetic at the scene. It had only been a year since the fallen human arrived. After they finally left the Underground and their havoc was done, the bell nearly tolled all day for the lost. It had become mandatory to report prior on NTT when the bell was going to ring and for what purpose. Too many monsters had been set off in a panicked frenzy, afraid that another genocide was occurring. But with how often Sky stayed outside his home patrolling the Underground, it was no surprise he almost never heard the news for whom the bell tolls.
