AND IT'S GOOD!
Great, breezy analysis that touches on gameplay a little and story a lot. This game needs more attention.
🚨 IT'S THAT TIME🚨
In this month's video essay, I discuss why Ori and the Blind Forest doesn't work... (for me) but why YOU should still love it. 🥰

This is a great video essay on Pokemon Black & White’s story.
Personally I consider B&W to be the most thematically interesting installment in the franchise because of its willingness to bring up moral questions about the norms of this fictional world without making the player feel like an absolute asshole for engaging in the mechanics the game is built around.
My view slightly differs from the essayist in that back when I played the game for the first time, despite how idyllic Unova is portrayed to be, N’s words still stayed with me whenever I was participating in battles. It made me ask “are my Pokemon really happy with this?” So I believe the player IS given enough food for thought about the concerning elements of being a Pokemon trainer, since the rest of the game world seems to be trying to balance out any negatively drawn conclusions by portraying most human-Pokemon interactions in the story as peaceful and mutually beneficial.
I do agree that the story would have benefited from showcasing a scenario where someone besides Team Plasma was abusing Pokemon in a more unambiguous way, but at least we are given N’s backstory which confirms that such cruelty does happen.
