Countries of Mundus: Skyles

Introduction: The Nation of Skyles is a country in Western Otera. It is bordered to the east by Bablea , to the north by Ebros, and to the south by Atren; the Cerwiss Ocean lies to its west. Skyles has a significantly large Avesian population, and it is an influential member of the Aegis Coalition, a transcontinental alliance of human and Avesian governments.

History: The history of Skyles begins roughly 600 years ago around 1300 CE. After the dissolution of the Anti-Gol War Alliance, the various Avesian tribes who formed the Avesian faction of the Alliance broke apart. As nomadic people, each Avesian tribe were culturally distinct and saw little reason to form a collective. So instead, the Avesian tribes traveled across all of Yaquoris, each tribe primarily composed of a single Avesian genus. 

That said, prior to the War of the End, most Avesian tribes shared a mutual hatred for each other due to generation-long blood feuds; after the War, their shared cause, passion, and bloodshed formed strong, brotherhood bonds between the tribes. The Avesian tribes began intermingling with each other, and soon the divide between the Parvus, Talus, Pelagus and Huginnite Avesians was all but washed away. 

The Avesian tribe that formed Skyles was the Parvus Tribe, which translates into the common tongue from the Avesian language of Vuvili to the “Small Bone Tribe.” The Parvus Tribe was primarily composed of Parvus Avesians, though the Talus Avesians also made up a sizable minority within the tribe. The Parvus Tribe were primarily fishermen who migrated up and down the Veth and Kreks Rivers that flow from the Iiln Sea, while the Talus members were expert hunters. They took to domesticating Degenerate livestock when their population grew too large around 1460 CE.

Author’s Note: The Parvus Expanse in Aeshai is named after the Parvus Tribe. While once known as the Hyacin Expanse, a former lake area, the Expanse was renamed by humans once the area could not longer be recognized by its namesake. The Parvus Tribe, however, still calls it the Haycin Expanse, or in their language, Hyacin Ovu. Nowadays, many Avesians from the Parvus Tribe perform a pilgrimage to honor their ancestors. This is why the Avesian population in the country of Karfar fight so desperately to keep the land in Avesian hands, even though more Phractos live in the Parvus Expanse than Avesians.

Perhaps due to this mixed lifestyle, the Parvus Tribe quickly adapted when human tribes began raiding their camps around 1540 CE. While the humans managed to domesticate horses before the Avesians, the Talus members of the Parvus Tribe could run on equal footing with horses and fight with terrifying competence and strength, making the Tribe the military equals to humans. Not only that, but the natural patience of their Parvus members made them adept at ambush and figuring out human-stolen weaponry; even if the Parvus Tribe had little inclination to developing technology, they were quite talented at figuring out the proper use of swords, battering rams, and even catapults. 

After perhaps another century of battles and short wars, the humans and Avesians signed the Crimson Treaty in 1645 CE, and later formed the Aegis Coalition in 1704 CE. The Parvus Tribe settled down permanently, and by 1714, the Nation of Skyles was formed. 

Government and politics: Skyles is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Given how unaccustomed Avesian culture is to the concept of sovereigns, their lineage of kings and queens have rarely held more than a few formal authorities; their chief responsibilities lie in diplomatic relations with other countries and maintaining the royal blood line. The current monarch of Skyles is King Glaucio III. 

Most of the real political power lies in the Skyles Parliament, which is divided into two councils: the Clover Council and the Aegis Council. The Clover Council decides all internal laws and policies, while the Aegis Council decides all external laws within the context of the Aegis Coalition. These Councils are divided into further parties to provide checks and balances in political power. These two councils are lead by the prime minister, who is elected by the Clover Council. The current prime minister of Skyles is Velma Allegri.

Economy: The economy of Skyles is among the 4th largest economy in Otera and the 7th in Yaquoris. The nation’s currency, the Deluzi, is the world’s fifth largest reserve currency. Skyles served as a major player in the Industrial Revolution, and today Skyles’ industrial sector manufactures and exports just over one-third of the world’s military-grade weaponry. 

It goes without saying that I have simplified the migration of the Parvus genus and Parvus tribe for easier story telling. If a Parvus Avesian is found outside of Skyles, then please assume they migrated out of the tribe either after the Parvus Tribe split into smaller groups after migrating out of the Hyacin Expanse, or after the War of the End.
