The Connells--Slackjawed (HQ)
When you see musicians play,
most of the band is looking cool
but the drummer is looking...sigh, like a slack jawed yokel with his mouth wide open.
Many brilliant, if not legendary drummers play with their mouth open.
Like Steve Gadd:
and Brian Blade:
and arguably the most famous drummer to bang on a kit, Animal:
So the next time you see a drummer playing with his or her mouth hanging open like a half wit, don't point and laugh. Support them. Encourage them. They truly aspire to greatness.
Young Justice Episode 16
I can't remember what year it was, but during my college days at Virginia Tech (93-97), I went to see The Connells in concert at Burruss Hall. They were a regional band based in North Carolina. Their sound was a bit mellow, at least on their studio recordings, but they made their name and gained popularity for their high energy concerts.
I liked them before seeing them live, but I was an even bigger fan after that show. If you've never listened to their music and this song, Slackjawed - off of their 1993 album "Ring" - is your introduction to the band, it might surprise you to know that there were mosh pits at their concerts. As I said, their strength was live concerts, not studio recordings, though I still enjoy their albums.
If you like this song, check out '74-'75 from the same 1993 album.
