On This Day (7/15): Slaterica, Arn Mait'n, Shadow Spectrum

This was a friend’s show, so I’m a bit biased. Let’s dive in.

Shadow Spectrum is a sort of known local metal band here in Austin. They’re on a lot of bills anyway. I barely caught any of their set, so I can’t render a proper judgment on them.

Arn Mait’n was a bluegrass Iron Maiden cover band. It’s a funny idea, but it sounds better on paper than it ends up being live. I was actually really excited for this, but it just didn’t pan out. After you hear one song, you’ve heard them all. Then it just becomes a long slog through the rest of their set as they essentially play the same bluegrass riff over and over with different lyrics from different Maiden songs. I just don’t think this could be done well, no matter what.

Slaterica was badass. This is my friend’s band, so yeah. That being said, they do a really good job covering songs from Slayer, Metallica, and Pantera. I know the frontman is a bigger Metallica fan than anything else, so of course they ended up playing more Metallica than Slayer or Pantera. They’re a tight band though and do an admirable job playing songs from all three bands. They threw out some obscure songs that the bands would never play themselves too, like “No Leaf Clover,” that I was just happy to hear someone play, even if it wasn’t the real Metallica. Overall, I got drunk and it kicked ass. If you ever have a chance to see these guys, just go and have a good time with it.
